The Algerian city of Oran? Camus said it was boring even before the plague. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my favorite books. I wouldn't mind visiting that world. However, I think I would want to be a wealthy Victorian like the characters in The House of Velvet and Glass.(less)

Trapped in a Monet

Rain comes down in sheets on the day Edith comes home from the hospital. I watch as she slowly emerges from the passenger side of her niece’s car, the niece patiently holding her walker in place. Edith inches toward the house, bent under the niece’s umbrella. They’re both a blur of colors, like they’re trapped in a Monet. The back door clatters, and the kitchen light flips on.

My house is dark.

The White Album by Joan Didion
"Amazingly dull and self-important. I'd never read the author and after her recent death saw all the glowing obits so I thought I'd give her a try. This book is a series of pointless essays that just kind of ramble on with nothing much to say. And OMG" Read more of this review »

"I cannot bring myself to read further.... I have managed the first three essays of the book and did not enjoy them at all... the language is as elitist as it is pretentious, deliberately making a point of not being relatable. And of course, it oh so " Read more of this review »

"The driest, most crusty book I've ever read. It's the literary equivalent of being talked at by a boring snob at a party. It's mercifully short, though."
