Although I did my best to try to fit in, I was viewed as strange, weird and eccentric. As a result, I was severely bullied, which had a devastating effect on my mental and physical health, as well as on confidence and sense of self-worth. Sadly, my experience is all too common.

I was motivated to write The Spectrum Girl’s Survival Guide: How to Grow Up Awesome and Autistic to address the fact that I was unable to find a book that was written for autistic teen girls. The existing survival guides were written for autistic boys and most were written by non-autistic adults. I decided to write the type of book I wish had been available to guide me when I was growing up; an uplifting, informative and practical guide with advice and tips on how to navigate some of the unique challenges and issues that autistic teen girls face. But more than anything, I also wanted to write a book that encouraged autistic girls to embrace who they are and that reminds them that they are not alone.
