John Murnane is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Francisco, where he spent forty years running a cancer research laboratory and teaching cancer and cell biology to medical residents and graduate students. He received his PhD from UCLA in 1980.
After a career that exceeded his wildest expectations, retirement finally gave him the chance to do something he had always wanted: write novels.
His first novel, Blowing in the Wind, draws from his childhood growing up in the desert and the stories passed down by his father, a small-town newspaper editor. Stories from the desert

Many of the places in my story in Blowing in the Wind are important in my past. My parents lived, worked and were married in Trona, California. It is a mining town, which at the time was run by American Potash. They mined the salt on the dry lake. My father was editor of the Trona Argonaut.
