Why Black Romance?

I'm both a writer and a reader of black romance for a reason. I started my journey into romance with the books that were readily available and known to me in a small rural town; as you can probably imagine, there weren't a lot of faces that looked like mine on the covers or stories I could relate to in the pages. Still, I wrapped myself up in those stories and imagined that I, too, could be loved. One day, I picked up Brenda Jackson's "The Playa's Handbook" at an outlet store, and I had no idea what a treasure I'd found. The characters were brown and flawed and beautiful--just like me. They used language in a way that felt familiar and unique to my experience. And they knew love. Since then, there's been no stopping me. Writing is my gift, and love is my mission. At the risk of sounding cheesy, I write black romance because I want to spread around all the love that has been given to me.
