An average romantasy book that has a very interesting premise, with an opportunity to be an incredible story— but it did not live up to my expectations. I wish the world building and the magic system were fleshed out a bit more in order to create a m An average romantasy book that has a very interesting premise, with an opportunity to be an incredible story— but it did not live up to my expectations. I wish the world building and the magic system were fleshed out a bit more in order to create a more immersive story. I think the author had all the tools to make this a truly impressive book but didn’t quite know what to do with all of it. There isn’t much in this book that makes it stand out from other similar stories, but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless.

The book is mostly character-driven and has a lot of dialogue, although sometimes the tension between characters did not seem believable and the writing felt tacky.

The plot twist in this book was, unfortunately, easy to guess and I saw it from ages away, which then made me feel as if Rune is possibly much more stupid than she appears to be. Also, Gideon has the personality of a spoon and some character development might be good for him.

I don’t normally like love triangles anyway, but the one in this book felt especially unnecessary. Alex did not have to be in love with Rune to care about her the way he did— platonic friendships exist! I feel as if this triangle’s sole reason was to make the ending 10x more dramatic and emotional— it would have been better for them to be purely friends. I also don’t see how Rune never noticed his feelings towards her seeing as I don’t think Alex was very subtle about it; again, this makes me think Rune isn’t the brightest.

A few other issues I had was the fact that the writer kept beating into the reader’s head that Rune is so small and tiny compared to Gideon who is huge and his hands are bigger than her face or whatever. One mention of this would have been fine but the comparison was repeated a lot in this book so much it made me roll my eyes.
Harrow’s obsession to get Gideon to sleep with Rune was also by far the absolute weirdest thing in this book. I understand the motive behind her suggesting it, but the fact that she kept pushing it and manipulating Gideon to do what she wanted bordered on perversion and made me feel uncomfortable. This also showed the reader that Gideon is easily manipulated and in these scenes especially, doesn’t seem able to think for himself.

Critiques aside, this was an enjoyable story, albeit one that I feel as if I’ve read many times before. I believe the author had an interesting concept in their head but in writing, it fell flat. It is also worth noting that this book contains a lot more romance than it does actual magic and action scenes— which I would’ve loved to see more of—but I may yet pick up the sequel. although the plot of this book is not too extravagant— there are more dialogue scenes than action scenes— the storytelling is amazing and the concept of magic and spellcasting, the Blight and worldbuilding is a very interesting concept that I believe was executed beautifully.

it is only 400 pages, yet i was immersed completely in the main characters (Sciona’s) personality, her mind and her ambitions. she has so much depth to her and the reader knows exactly what drives her. i loved how she is not a perfect character but one who is significantly flawed, yet still shows growth as the story progresses.

as for Thomil, i wish we had got more of him but he is also a very well developed character who resonates with the reader as a single father and his mission to stay alive for his daughter and his tribe, but is struggling with his brokenness and his belief in a happy future for his family.

this book was truly painful to read— Wang’s writing is beautiful in its devastation and I felt so connected to these characters that it was almost as if everything that was happening to them, and everything they felt, were my experiences and my feelings.
i felt such rage throughout the entirety of this book pertaining to the extreme magical patriarchy, some of the insufferable characters and their unwillingness to use their critical thinking skills to question their values, their blind belief in a false god and the truly vile and heartbreaking treatment of the oppressed minority.

some part of me wishes the ending were different but another part of me knows that there couldn’t have been any other way for this book to end to allow the world to start anew. none of the massive issues in this book (such as the archmages and their apathy to the blind and unfair taking of human lives and their terrible, entitled ways of living which had been set in stone for three centuries) could have been fixed in a different way.

it is bittersweet but almost fitting that the two main characters who are supposed to be enemies and who were, for a while, turn out to love each other, even though there is no romance in the story and nothing more than the knowledge that their love is irrational and unthinkable and so very wrong by their standards, yet it is undeniably true to the very end. ...more
