Karl Farrell is a Liverpool-born author who writes romantasy and dark romance with heart, heat, and moral complexity. His debut novel, Veiled Marks (Book 1 in the Counterpart series), is a story he’s poured everything into — the kind of book he always wanted to find on the shelves.

He also writes across genres (children’s adventures, horror, and whatever else grabs him next) and co-founded Simms & Farrell Publishing with illustrator Lucy Simms.

Together they create books where words and illustrations are developed side-by-side, and they aim to support other authors along the way.

When he’s not writing, Karl is usually reading far too widely, arguing about endings, or dreaming of doing this full-time.

What tropes are in it?
Academy romantasy, counterpart/fated bond, dangerous pairing, secrets, morally grey heat.

How dark is it?
Adult dark romantasy. Heat and threat. Not a sweet romance.

Is it a standalone?
No. Book 1 of the Counterpart series. This book has an ending, the series does not.

When is Book 2?
After Veiled Marks is out. One book at a time.

I really enjoyed this one considering I hadn’t heard of it before. Good story and I love the witch, bear dynamic. Really enjoyed it and have the next one to read but haven’t started it yet.

It is one of the best horrors to be written but is very, very long.

Gothic dark academia with a proper chill on it. Island university, dead things, a professor you should not want. Lake is good at atmosphere. It is long, and I felt the length, but the mood stuck after I closed it.
