I’m a mom of four, trying to sneak in reading (and chocolate) when my kids are distracted.

What I read: Fantasy, romance, and historical fiction if it's playful—but I'm open to just about anything except horror. Bonus points for any book that makes me laugh, renews my faith in humanity, and/or gives me hope for our future.

As a family, we check out 30-50 picture books every week at the library, which means we read a lot of picture books every year, but I don't rate all of those here. So if you need a picture book recommendation, send me a message!

How I rate books:

* 5 stars—I LOVE this book, and just thinking of my experience of reading it feels like a warm hug. I feel so passionately that you should read it that I'd lend my own copy to you.

Jessica Townsend
“We don't ignore bigotry, Jack. That's how cowardly bigots turn into brave bigots.”
Jessica Townsend, Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow

Margaret Rogerson
“She now understood that the world wasn’t kind to young women, especially when they behaved in ways men didn’t like, and spoke truths that men weren’t ready to hear.”
Margaret Rogerson, Sorcery of Thorns

Lawrence J. Cohen
“I’m always amazed when adults say that children “just did that to get attention”. Naturally children who need attention will do all kinds of things to get it. Why not just give it to them?”
Lawrence Cohen, Playful Parenting

Charles Bukowski
“If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.”
Charles Bukowski, What Matters Most is How Well You Walk Through the Fire

Anna Quindlen
“The thing that is really hard, and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself.”
Anna Quindlen
