Jim C. Hines began his writing career with a trilogy about the irrepressible Jig the goblin, which actor and author Wil Wheaton described as "too f***ing cool for words." He went on to deconstruct fairy tales in his four-book Princess series, made all the world's literature a grimoire in the Magic ex Libris series, and explored the heroic side of spacecraft sanitation in his Janitors of the Post Apocalypse trilogy. His short fiction has appeared in more than fifty magazines and anthologies. Jim has been outspoken about topics like sexism and harassment, and was the editor of the Invisible series—three collections of personal essays about representation in sf/f. He received the Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer in 2012. Jim currently lives in m ...more

Hi Cintia,

I don't have an easy answer for you, I'm afraid. This can be a very frustrating and discouraging business to try to break into. I've got a box of about 500 rejection letters, and most of the "successful" writers I know have something similar. Which is just to say, I think most writers sympathize with what you're feeling, and know what you're going through.

And there are a lot of writers out there, but I'd encourage you not to think of them as competition. It's not a zero-sum game, and one writer's success doesn't hurt others. (Sometimes one writer's success can actually help, either by bringing publishers income they can use to take chances on new writers, or by getting readers excited about reading more stories.)

For me, one of the keys was getting back to why I *wanted* to write. I stopped worrying as much about writing "publishable" stories, and just had fun. Ironically, those were the stories that ended up being publishable.

Be patient and kind with yourself. Find what you love about writing, and focus on that. And maybe chat with some other writers? It can help a lot to connect and vent with people who understand what you're going through.

All the best,
Jim(less)

If a trading card had enough story content to actively engage the imagination, it would be theoretically possible to use one for libriomancy. There's a similar bit of thinking and theorizing that comes up in book four about video game manuals.(less)

How Do Kiteships Fly?

Since several people have asked, I thought I’d do an actual blog post talking about how the kiteships in Kitemaster actually fly.

Not to spoil the ending, but the short answer is: kites + sails + magic.

I think the original idea to have flying ships came along between the 2015 draft and the 2018 draft. My first thought was simply that kites fly and my book was about wind and kites and magic so why n
