Megan Carroll's Blog
February 27, 2020
Greetings Readers!
Holy first blog, Batman!
I figured with my first post I should introduce myself a little and tell you how my writing career began.
Well...hello! I'm Megan Carroll. I was born and raised in Florida (don't judge me). I love Batman, vampires, and video games. That's the basics. Recently I made the Northern move from Boca Raton, Florida to Indiana with my husband Sean and our 15-year-old dog, Bowie. Each time we mention that we just moved from Florida, every single Hoosier has asked, "But...why?" My husbands job moves us around a ton, but we have been lucky to have stayed in Florida until now. And with me being a full time writer and working from home, it makes it much easier.
Bowie seems to have adapted to the weather better than I have. He gets super spunky when it snows, and looks pretty sharp in the hoodies and jackets I've made him wear. I never knew there was such a HUGE difference between 35 degrees and 5. This Florida girl thought anything below 60 was just cold. Boy, was I wrong. I also always made fun of the term "freezing rain". "You mean snow?" I'd say with a snotty eye roll. Present me now says, "IT'S NOT AT ALL THE SAME, DUMMY". Snow is pretty. Freezing rain is terrible.
Anyways, it's been cold. But not THAT cold. We've gotten lucky. Or so I've heard. I'll take everyone's word for it.
Reading has always been one of my favorite things to do, along with playing video games, and watching movies. The first book series I fell in love with, like many people my age, was Goosebumps and Fear Street. I still keep a small collection of my favorites. The first "grown-up" book I read was Carl Sagan's Contact. It was for a 5th grade book report, and I thought I'd try and look extra smart by selecting the fattest book on my dad's bookshelf. I loved it, though I'm not entirely sure I understood half of it at the time.
High school is where I discovered I had a love for writing. I got dreadful grades on English class, and my teacher always attested that to my natural talent for creative writing and not...er..."proper" school writing. I used commas every 5 words, using them for dramatic pause more than grammar. It was easy to tell that my writing was more suited for entertainment - especially screenwriting. In drama class we were challenged with coming up with an original character and writing a dramatic monologue for them. Well, being right in the middle of my "sporty goth" phase, I decided to create a vampire. His name was Damien (of course) and he was super pissed about something. I wrote and performed the monologue with all of the angst and darkness of a feisty, wannabe goth, teenager. (More on Damien and his problems in a later blog post...)
Upon finishing high school I took my love for writing and movies to the next level and went to film school. I wrote several screenplays, even sold a few following graduation. I got a job at a TV station in my hometown and stuck with that industry for as long as I could stomach (no offense TV friends), but always found myself writing.
After filling my bookshelves and filing cabinets with screenplays, short stories, and other musings for years, I finally came to the logical conclusion that I should become a writer full time. I'm so grateful that my husband's job has given us the opportunity for me to stay home with the dog and write all day.
Well, that's me as a writer in a nutshell. With my next few posts I'll tell the story of how Breed: Prophecy Reawakened came to be the 600-year-long, complicated love story that it is today.
Thank you for reading and following along! <3
