2009
FIRST WOMAN TO WIN A NOBEL PRIZE IN ECONOMIC SCIENCES
Elinor “Lin” Awan Ostrom was of the era when women were discouraged from pursuing an education or a career other than teaching, nursing or secretarial. Ostrom was also discouraged from taking trigonometry in high school because her algebra and geometry grades weren’t stellar. As a result, she was rejected as a Ph.D. student in economics because she didn’t have math courses. She chose to major in political science instead. When she applied for jobs, employers thought she wanted a secretarial position. A law firm finally hired her as an assistant personnel manager, the first woman at that firm who wasn’t in a secretarial position.
In 2009 Ostrom was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in economic sciences, more accurately, the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.
Through her studies, she proved that abiding by certain factors, depletion of natural resources can be prevented. This is possible when communities come together and self-govern and make rules that prevent depletion of resources. She challenged previous theories and is considered one of the most influential economists of the 20th century. Her theory is explained in a link below under “More Information.”
The Bloomington School of Political Economy at Indiana University in Bloomington is associated with the work Elinor and Vincente Ostrom conducted.

Until the 1970s, men dominated news broadcasting, including weather, but when the Equal Rights Amendment became headline news, people became aware that women could hold positions on TV as well. Stations introduced the moniker “Wanda the Weather Girl,” and a woman gave the weather report with viewers often snickering at the name. Now decades later, women are respected meteorologists, and Ada Monzón is one of them.
Monzón is chief meteorologist for WAPA-TV and WKAQ Radio in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the first meteorologist from that unincorporated U.S. territory. She is the first woman in Latin America to be a certified broadcast meteorologist and Fellow of the American Meteorological Society. She provided residents with weather updates during the devastating 2017 Hurricanes Irma and Maria and helped them stay calm.
She is the founder and president of EcoExploratorio: Museo de Ciencias de Puerto Rico (Museum of Sciences of Puerto Rico), which focuses on environmental protection and education. One purpose is to inspire children’s curiosity. She is the only professional meteorologist with a master’s degree in Tropical Meteorology in the news media of Puerto Rico.

WOMEN AND ADVERSITY: CAROLINA CRUZ-NEIRA
PIONEER IN VIRTUAL REALITY
NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
I remember seven years ago going to a virtual reality arcade to cover a story I was assigned. Rather than choosing a game to play, I chose to take a leisurely walk through a park filled with flowers, trees and sunshine. I donned the headset, stepped on the treadmill and the 360-degree immersive experience opened a world of wonder for me. I was in this arcade, but virtually I was outside in the park. Carolina Cruz-Neira is responsible for this.
Her discovery of Cave Automatic Virtual Environment, known as CAVE, goes further. CAVE is immersive virtual reality in which images are projected on walls and the floor of a room where several people gather. They wear special stereo-equipped glasses and can interact with each other.
In 1992, Cruz-Neira and two other systems engineers developed the first CAVE, but in 1995 for her Ph.D. dissertation, she developed the specifications and implementations for using CAVE.
Computer science wasn’t her dream job. When Cruz-Neira was growing up she wanted to be a ballet dancer, and ballet consumed her life. At 21, she broke her knee in a skiing accident, which made it impossible for her to make ballet her career. However, she got a job at a company that provided computing services. Her life changed again, and she is now known worldwide as a computer scientist who changed virtual reality. She is opening the door to use this technology for practical purposes.
Few facts about Cruz-Neira are available, so here is what I gathered. Bio

Davonne Reaves has achieved recognition and success by being positive about her goals. She has said so many things that are worth quoting.
“Dreams after all do become a reality with passion—something which carries immense power beyond measurable strength.”
“If there’s anything that this experience has taught me is that with enough hard work, determination, tenacity, and perseverance you can achieve your dreams no matter what they are or who tells you otherwise!”
“I hope my story will inspire more people to think about hotel investing and ownership as more than just a daydream.”
“I wouldn’t be where I am if I listened to the people who said I couldn’t do it.”
These words should inspire the most determined skeptic.
According to National Association of Black Hotel Owner Operators and Developers, less than two percent of hotel owners are Black, and less than one percent are Black females.

August is Black Business Month
Besides being the first woman to have part ownership in three sports franchises, Sheila Johnson is the first Black woman to be a billionaire.
This entrepreneur proves the connection between math and music. She excelled as a violinist and was the first Black to win statewide violin competition in Illinois. Her father, George Crump, played the piano, which Johnson learned to play, but in fifth grade the violin was her instrument of choice. She played in the University of Illinois orchestra and was first chair in the Illinois All-state orchestra. She taught music at Sidwell Friends private school in Washington, D.C. and founded the Young Strings in Action youth orchestra in 1975.
She turned from music to media when her husband, Robert Johnson, investigated cable television and observed a lack of programming for Blacks. They co-founded Black Entertainment Television in 1980.
After their divorce in 2002, she bought a farm in Middleburg, Virginia and developed the 350-acres into Salamander Inn & Spa.
In 2005 she became part owner of the Washington Mystics WNBA, Washington Capitals NHL and the Washington Wizards NBA teams. She bought the Innisbrook Golf Resort near Tampa in 2007.
Her philanthropy runs from fighting poverty to supporting the arts and education.

Women and Adversity: Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin Grande Dame of Champagne

Women and Adversity:Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin
Grande Dame of Champagne
When I told my nephew, actor Robert Wilde, that I write this blog, he said Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin (pronounced Barb-Nee’cole Klee’Ko Pone sar’ duh) was an entrepreneur who fit my requisites for Women and Adversity. He read a book about her and learned she perfected the taste of champagne. I enjoy a glass of the bubbly and decided to investigate this valiant woman.
Few women born in the 1700s gained fame outside the home, but Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin is one who did. Her father was a wealthy merchant in Reims, France, who arranged his daughter’s marriage to the son of another wealthy French merchant, Philippe Clicquot, who owned vineyards in addition to his other holdings. Barbe-Nicole, 21, married Francois Clicquot, 23.
Seven years later in 1805, Francois, whose father had given him control of the Clicquot assets, died of typhoid, although some reports state he committed suicide. The couple’s daughter, Clementine, was three. Whatever the case, Madame Clicquot asked her father-in-law to allow her to manage the business. He agreed if she completed an apprenticeship to prove she was capable of running it. She succeeded and became head of the business, which included banking, wool trading and champagne production. She concentrated on the champagne segment.
On July 21, 1810, she opened Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin. Veuve (pronounced vuv) means “widow” in French. Madame Clicquot had developed a way to eliminate the cloudy appearance of champagne with a method labeled “riddling.” With this system she inverted the bottle filled with champagne after the second fermentation in order to allow the sediment to gather at the cork. The sediment was removed without disturbing the wine so it maintained its bubbles and taste.
She earned the title “The Grande Dame of Champagne.” The distinctive yellow label is her signature champagne, Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut.

Women and Adversity: Patti Callahan Henry, Novelist

Patti Callahan Henry, Novelist, Silver Coast Winery, Ocean Isle Beach, NC (Photo by Jo Ann Mathews)
Women and Adversity: Patti Callahan Henry, NovelistPatti Callahan Henry’s most recent novel, The Story She Left Behind, is riveting and one I’ve seen women reading at the beach and the pool. Readers get enthralled with the story because it starts with Bronwyn Newcastle Fordham telling the reader she’s leaving everyone behind. It’s 2am. She gets in a boat and drives it away.
Fast forward 25 years and Fordham’s daughter, Clara Harrington, enters the story and tells how she was eight years old when her mother disappeared. She receives a telephone call from Charles Jameson, who lives in London, saying he has papers that belonged to Fordham with instructions to give them directly to Harrington. So the mystery continues. The story is about finding Fordham, Harrington’s quest to find her, and Harrington’s precocious daughter, Wynnie.
Henry has written 18 novels. Some are historical fiction while others are contemporary. On her recent book tour promoting The Story She Left Behind, one stop was Silver Coast Winery in Ocean Isle Beach, N. C. I had an opportunity to ask her a few questions before her presentation.
Q: What’s the biggest challenge you had to face as a writer?
A: Getting published
Q: What obstacles have you faced as a writer?
A: Finding the right story that I can put everything I’ve got into it, not writing the story somebody else wants me
to write. Also, not writing the story I think will sell or be popular but finding the story that I want to tell and to put everything I’ve got into it.
Henry and three of her novelist friends, Mary Kay Andrews, Kristin Harmel and Kristy Woodson, started Friends & Fiction, a live program that runs Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Eastern time. The group discusses writing and publishing. Check the link below.

June is Pride Month
Because her father didn’t want a child, Patricia Highsmith’s mother tried to abort her by drinking turpentine. The attempt failed, and nine days before their daughter was born, Jay and Mary Plangman divorced. Such is the start of Patricia Highsmith’s troubled life.
Her mother married Stanley Highsmith in 1924, but Patricia lived with her maternal grandmother until 1927 before moving to New York to live with her mother and stepfather, whom she hated. Her growing-up years were turbulent in some ways because she was sent to live with her grandmother in Texas for a year, and she felt abandoned. She did well in high school and college and read widely, becoming fascinated with Edgar Allan Poe’s stories and eastern philosophy.
Highsmith’s short stories were published in both her high school and college literary magazines, but when she graduated from Barnard, the top magazines—Time, Vogue, New Yorker among others—didn’t hire her. She got a job with comic book publisher Sangor—Pines but wrote her own stories on the side. Her stories gained fame, and she was touted in some circles as a genius.
She had numerous sexual experiences, primarily with women, and didn’t really like men. She was rude, insulted Jews, became an alcoholic, drinking from morning until night, smoked about 40 cigarettes a day and would bring her pet snails to parties. It was unfortunate that her life dissipated to this extent.
Some of her quotes:
Honesty, for me, is usually the worst policy imaginable. My imagination functions much better when I don’t have to speak to people.Honestly, I don’t understand why people get so worked up about a little murder! On February 4, 1995 Highsmith passed away in Locarno, Switzerland of aplastic anemia and lung cancer. She was 74 years old.

Virginia Woolf: novelist, essayist (1927, from her collection)
Women and Adversity:Virginia Woolf

June is Pride Month
Virginia Woolf was a brilliant English novelist and essayist, known for her stream of consciousness technique. When she was five, she loved books and wrote letters. When she was 10, she began a family newspaper, which she wrote until 1895 when her mother died. She says the loss of her mother caused her first nervous breakdown, but she had other issues before then.
She experienced depression and mental instability throughout her life. She revealed that her half-brothers sexually abused her, one started the abuse when she was six, the other when she was 13. Her writing concentrated on intimate relationships between women, and she personally had several intimate relationships with women, especially with Vita Sackville-West. She called herself a “sapphist,” which refers to Greek poet Sappho, who had intimate relations with women. Woolf’s husband, Leonard, accepted her involvement with women. Unfortunately, her depression led to her suicide in 1941.
