One-time soldier, father to a London architect and a Johannesburg businesswoman, marketing consultant and educator – Alan’s wide experience of life and human nature comes through clearly in his writing. In particular, his years as an officer (decorated) with the soldiers of a black paratroop battalion in the Zimbabwe-Rhodesian conflict placed him in a unique position to pen 'Of Land and Spirits', widely recognised as the defining novel of the Southern African Bush War.

Keen observation of the after-effects of battle on former combatants led to a follow-up novel, 'A Cross for Two Graves', set in present-day Europe and Africa.

His third novel, 'A Salient in Flanders', takes readers to a different era and the trenches of WW1. It has been acclaim ...more

FYI- I just finished A Salient in Flanders, which I read in an ARC from Net Galley. Thanks for the book for which I left a 5 ⭐️ review on NG, Goodreads and Amazon. Great writing, unforgettable novel. Are there more in your future?

Thank you for your review. Answering your question, I am mulling the possibility of a sequel to 'Salient', perhaps including some of its surviving characters and tracing them further into the war's final months. What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?

I like this idea that we are responsible for who we are and where we are because we made the choice; we made the decision. Yet this argument ignores the impact of fate – and by fate I mean the twists and turns in Life’s passage over which we have no control because the decision or choice was taken not by us, but for us: Your boss tells you to postpone that appointment you made with a client in Twin Towers for 9/11 and you live. But for your boss’s decision you would have died. This is an extreme example, but this is what I mean by fate. So I don’t think that my own life holds any special mystery that could form the plot of a particularly good book, no more so than the mysteries in any other man’s life. Life itself is the mystery, and all good novels are revelations of what happens in the moments of crisis that occur in all people’s lives – the choices that they make in those moments and the consequences of those choices.(less)
