Eve writes speculative fiction, mainly about the things that scare her.
Longlisted for the Guardian's Not the Booker Prize and described by Waterstones as "an exciting new voice in crime fiction", Eve Smith’s debut novel The Waiting Rooms, set during a global antibiotic crisis was shortlisted for the Bridport Prize First Novel Award and was a Guardian book of the month.
Her second thriller, Off Target, about a world where genetic engineering of children has become routine, was a pick of the month in The Times, who described it as: "an astute, well-researched and convincing novel of ideas".
Her third thriller, ONE, set in a one-child policy Britain ravaged by the climate crisis was longlisted for Best Novel in the British Science Fiction Associ

Hi Bob
Firstly, apologies for answering this rather late!
So this is an ongoing fear that many writers have, that some unique element of their story will appear elsewhere right before your book is published. (I have been through this, too!)
Whilst we may wish to think what we write is totally unique, the reality is that most plotlines have been used multiple times in other books or films before. It is more about the way you use these plot elements, the distinctiveness of your characters' voice and your setting, and the overall tone of the novel: that's what engages readers.
So, unless this plot element truly is unusual, I would not worry.
And even if it is, as you are only just finishing writing your book, by the time it has been edited and then published you'll probably be at least a year on, and it won't matter! I hope this is useful.

A few weeks after we moved in, a neighbour told us that there was a Roman tomb under the floor of our living room, and that she and several other villagers had seen it. The previous owner had discovered it whilst building an extension decades ago, but, too superstitious to either look inside the stone coffin or remove it, had left it undisturbed.
I would love to know who was inside that tomb. How they had lived, and died. Imagine what clues to their life might lie buried alongside their remains... And what led to them being buried, alone, on that road.(less)

HOW TO BUILD WORLDS

I did a piece this week for an online writing magazine: writing.ie on authentic world-building.

As an author of standalone speculative thrillers, world-building is a critical skill in my armoury, and one of the aspects of writing I enjoy most. I invest a significant amount of time in conjuring up near-future worlds centred around my book’s premise. Each of my novels starts with a question that dic

"Well wasn't this just a sneaky little dark horse? Don't get me wrong the premise of this is great but I've been suckered by thrillers before only for the execution to be poor and lacklustre so I expected this to disappoint but it exceeded my expectat" Read more of this review »

The Cure by Eve Smith
"Another great story from Eve Smith. I enjoyed reading about Ruth and Mara, although the switching between now and then muddled me sometimes. She writes great evil villains and I wonder where she got her inspiration for the billionaire Busk lol."
