Cody Keenan rose from a campaign intern in Chicago and deputy pirate to become chief speechwriter at the White House and Barack Obama’s post-presidential collaborator. That's great. One of the reasons I wrote this book is to convince young people like my students that even though it can be frustrating, a career in politics and public service is worthy of their time and energy. I hope you feel the same way as you start out in yours.

I am biased because he's a friend and former colleague, but "The World As It Is" by Ben Rhodes is also a must-read for people starting a career in political communications. And the first book I read when I started my first job in the senate was "Robert Kennedy: His Life" by Evan Thomas. Still sticks with me.
