Jamie Lee Hamann is a poet, essayist, and science writer whose work lives at the intersection of the literary and the scientific — the place where the wonder of the natural world meets the craft and beauty of literary form. In Science: Poems and Writings, Hamann brings together two distinct literary registers — the essay and the poem — to create a dual-form collection that is as intellectually engaging as it is sensory and beautiful. It is a collection for the science lover who has always wanted their passion treated with literary seriousness, and for the curious newcomer who has been waiting for the science writing that welcomes them through wonder rather than demanding prior expertise. Hamann's work speaks to readers across communities — ...more

A Rhapsody of Static

"A Rhapsody of Static,” my first collection of poetry, defined my chaotic twenties. A manuscript printed at Office Depot and carried under my arm from one poetry reading to another from Carson City Nevada to Great Falls Montana. Free verse as free as I lived. My only hope a reading at a bar where I could consume a few drinks for free. In a world years away I found myself challenged by “Strong Meas Read more of this blog post »

“Couple starts fire for evening
along the shore on the sand
find dreams of lake horizon
memories of dune

Sleep all night out in warm rain
to learn love out on this beach
gear from the day all folded
dusty shrine of plank

The sun past the wave
calm morning creeps in as cold
swirling in tangle of weed
washed upon the shore

He pushes through morning bush
she allows the ocean wave
they roll slowly to the tide
this youthful couple

Folded within their feeling
the soft serpent curl of tide
the dark roar of the high beach
where ocean’s lips touch

On rock where lizard sunbaths
sand rests between fern and weed
massive silver wave breaks through
she swims he watches”

Jamie Hamann Hello Olivia.
Pardon my late respose. "Songs for Sefe" as a concept began with Geothe. Geothe is probably as far away from Edna St. Vincent Millay in style but let me expain. I have had a long standing love affair with the sonnet and after years of exploration I was able to determine that sonnets have the ability to create very impactful storytelling situations.
I immediately started my first story told in sonnet; "Mephistopheles" sonnets written while aggressively studying Geothe's text. I finished this collection and felt there was more stories to be told in this fashion. Now back to Edna St. Vincent Millay. First of all I love her deeply and decided to write sonnets that told her story. The story of not only the first poet to reach celebrity status in America but the first woman poet. So "Songs for Sefe" is the story of her relationship with her husband Eugene told in sonnet while I was aggresively consuming all her writing.
I hope that answers your question please feel free to ask more at anytime. I may be late in response but I will respond.
Thank You,
Jamie Lee Hamann
