Ned Ward was born in February, 1993, in the United Kingdom, where he lives now. Ned grew up loving to read, and has always been drawn to fantasy and science fiction. Through his time as a child, and teen, he would soar through books in a matter of weeks, and sometimes mere days. When Ned went to university, however, he stopped reading for a while. This was mainly due to a battle with mental health after the death of his father, his recovery of which, is a time in his life which greatly motivates him.

Ned Ward studied at the University of Northampton, and graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Illustration in 2017. It was during his time at university, and his struggles with mental health, that Ned started to write his first novel, which came

I am so sorry, I did not see this until looking over my actual questions ha!

My inspirations for The Spectre and the Raven stem both from my personal life, and from the history of our world. I drew a lot of inspiration for the native people of Brineth from Native Americans, and the horrors of what happened to them when the British 'discovered' the Americas.

I also created Athias out of a place of darkness. I poured a lot of my own trauma, which I was battling at that time, into him, and it was important to me that he came from a people that were oppressed in the real world. I wanted to create a protagonist that was flawed, and broken, to an extent, but ultimately through events that were not fully within his control.

As for the magic and magic 'system' in the books, I drew a lot of inspiration and did a lot of research into the old Norse tales of magic and the arcane. Using Yggdrasil as a lot of inspiration for how magic connects all the worlds of life, death, and everything in between. (less)

I'm currently working on The Throne of Thorns, which is book one of a series titled The Empire of Flowers.

The Throne of Thorns picks up twelve years after a war which created the Empire of Flowers, and saw mankind vs coven in an epic conflict that saw magic almost completely eradicated from the world. The story focuses on five main PoV characters, and two secondary, as an ancient prophecy comes to light, that brings conspiracy, power, betrayal, and a new conflict into the fold.

Just as I did my first novel, I aim to fill the world with variety, diverse characters, and move away from stereotypes in fantasy! (less)
