When I make it back to the room, I yelp and drop my phone. A naked Adonis is sitting on the edge of the freshly made bed, typing away on a laptop.
He looks up at me with a wide, slick grin, the light of the screen giving him an almost ghostly appearance. “Hey, muffin.”
It takes me a second to find my voice. “Do you not own clothes?” I say, tearing my eyes from him. I mean it to be chiding, but it comes out weak.
He laughs. “Well, you’re the one who didn’t knock.”
My lips part, but I’ve got nothing.
“Mind shutting the door?”
I do as he asks but stay facing it so he has time to get dressed. The bed jostles and his feet patter in the direction of his suitcase. Clothes rustle around and he heads back. “Do you mind it when I’m naked?” he teases.
My cheeks flame. “Just get dressed, Jake.”
“Well, do you?”
“Jake.”
A laugh.
He must take my indirect response as tacit agreement because he closes in…or maybe he’s just seeing how far he can get. Seeing if I’m still as rigid.
The heat of his body washes over my back, his left palm connecting with the door to prop himself up and partially cage me in.
That clean, spicy scent fills the air around me. My breathing stills.
His tone morphs, thick with desire. “You sure you want that?”
I can’t answer this time.
Lips hover next to my ear, the soft puff of air causing a shiver. “Because I don’t think you want that.”

The speakers on stage blare to life, and the band cranks up the volume. The lead guitarist strums another series of chords and blows into the microphones to make sure they’re on. Some random “Whooos!” roll in behind it from the bargoers who are already buzzing. A guy next to us thrusts his beer into the air and amber liquid sloshes from the neck.
Watching everything unfold and reveling in how good it feels to have another night like this with Jake, I loop my purse on the back of the chair and get comfortable. Flash him a contented smile when I realize he’s watching me instead of the growing crowd.
He flashes a smile back, and my heart kicks. Neither of us can manage to look at anything else. We’re like two comets, Jake and I, who, despite all the space in the universe to roam, always manage to find a way to collide. Bright and violent. Blinding, this wonderful yet disturbing alchemy we possess. Or maybe it possesses us.
His hand finds mine under the table and gives it a gentle squeeze.
Yes, it’s going to be another good night of drinks and bad decisions. I can feel it in my bones. In the cosmic energy pulsing around us.
And I’m okay with that.
