I was raised in a small town in Flanders, in a family where bread and butter were put on the table because no one lives forever. My father, you see, was a master mason, a tombstone maker, and I spent part of my childhood happily romping among my fellow townspeople resting in peace at the local cemetery.
Then, after the romping, came the roaming.
And the writing.
Poetry mostly, as I criss-crossed Europe this side of the Iron Curtain, then the States, Canada and Alaska, by train, bus and thumb, on foot, in kayaks and rafts and the odd dogsled. Somehow, in between travels, I also managed to snare a degree in literature.
Then came settled life, a family and a career, and let's not forget the dog, and the writing stopped.
Now, the roaming's back, tho

If you’re like me, you’ll start to browse, taking in the musty smell and brittle feel of yellowed paper, familiarising yourself with the old handwriting and slightly archaic French.

The first few pages that pass through your hands seem trivial enough – day to day correspondence, family matters – but then, as you delve in deeper, you come across this letter with its rather peculiar salutation: “Cher compagnon de voyage, cher Egyptien”.

Next there’s a government summons for an expedition, its destination kept secret, and then follow repeated references to Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign. All this gives you pause and you wonder, who was this ancestor, this “Samuel Bernard”, the author and owner of these letters?

From the documents you can glean the vague outline of his life and career as he brushes shoulders with some of the most illustrious men of his time. But an outline is not enough. You want to understand the why and wherefore, and after months of research, you come to realise your ancestor’s papers may well hint at a story different from the official historical record.

A story worth telling. A story that takes you on a journey from revolutionary France to Egypt and back. A fiction in the end, I admit, as I took the liberty to fill in blanks and connect dots, but a plausible one respecting historical facts and dates.
