That's an interesting date for me, because it was in July 2012 years ago that after not writing any fiction longer than ten pages since high school, I entered Camp NaNoWriMo and challenged myself to write 50,000 words in a month.

The novel that I began that summer of 2012 is the one which I now have author's copies of on the shelf next to me. And that leads to my advice for aspiring writers.

First, you're only going to go from aspiring writer to writer if you sit down and write. NaNoWriMo with it's "who cares if it's good, just write" ethic was something that I'd resisted for a long time due to my natural perfectionism. But I'm also an obligation personality, and it was only by giving myself that commitment and even exposing my draft as I wrote it to a small cadre of blog readers that I manged to get the words flowing and write my novel.

Second, is perhaps harder advice, and it has to do with why my novel came out on the eighth anniversary of my plunge into drafting: Writing is only half the work. Revising is also a major piece of work. In some ways the changes I made were fairly minor, but they took a lot of work which was much less thrilling than the original drafting, and they significantly improved the final work. But even editing is not the end of it. Once I had what I thought was a finished novel I spent a year writing multiple drafts of a query letter and sending the novel out to over 125 agents. By the end of that I still didn't have an agent, which took me out of the running for the big five publishers, but I submitted it directly to a small press and finally found someone willing to bring my book into the world. And when I finally got the contract in my hands, that's still a year and a half before today. There were more edits to do, and copy edits, and proofs, and finding an early review team, and begging every connection I'd made over years of blogging and social media to give the novel a try. It doesn't have to take nearly as long as I took to get a novel from first draft to published. I took significant time off to work on other projects in between. But it does take a lot of time, so the second piece of advice boils down to: never give up.(less)

" It really is an enjoyable read.

This time I was reading it aloud to my two youngest boys, ages 8 and 12. The 12-year-old in particular enjoyed it.
