Since moving to Calne, Wiltshire in 2016, I have discovered an enduring interest in the history of this wonderful town. To explore more deeply, I started a Facebook group called Calne in Photographs, and have been blessed with many members who generously share their insights, knowledge, and memories.

My first book, Calne Place Names, published in 2020, was an attempt to share what I’d learned and researched about Calne in my first four years of living here. It offers an overview of the town’s history through the lens of its place names—both official and unofficial—used over the centuries.

Place names of Calne: Hungerford Road

Hungerford RoadHungerford Road is part of the c. 1960s housing development and is a mix of bungalows and semi-detached properties.

The road is named for the Hungerford family of Studley House (now demolished). Robert Hungerford bought the house at Studley from the Norbornes and was a Guild Steward in 1672[1]. Hs son, Walter (d. 1754), was MP for Calne multiple times, with the last time being 17 Read more of this blog post »
