It’s a peek into the life of someone who wasn’t just blessed with a child but born anew as a mother herself.

The stories are candid and heartwarming, written with an honesty that makes you nod, smile, and often burst out laughing. I chuckled through most of it and even guffawed on a flight (alarming my poor co-passenger!). Every anecdote feels relatable. The frantic dashes to the stationery shop for last-minute project supplies, the holiday homework marathons, the pandemic-era frustrations, and those everyday tug-of-war moments yo-yoing between love and exasperation.

Padma’s first rebellion is to get away from her protective parents. What she gets is a buffet of bitter truths, starting with unrequited love. From there, it’s a roller coaster of career highs followed by painful nosedives, heartbreaks, makeovers, and the occasional public shaming. Each time she crashes, she gets up, dusts herself off, and tries again. Resilience, thy name is Padma. Most certainly so!

Anupama’s storytelling mirrors Padma’s metamorphosis with the evolution of her Amma and Nanna, subtly weaving in India’s changing social landscape. Amma, in particular, is a scene-stealer. She is part tiger mother and part roast master. Her verbal volleys, especially during the clothes-shopping scene, are pure comedic gold. One minute she’s shaming Padma for life choices, the next she’s ready to eviscerate verbally any man who dares hurt her daughter. Typical Indian mother!
The supporting cast are not just props but fleshed-out characters with their own quirks, flaws, and charms. And as for the central question—who will Padma end up with?—Anupama teases the reveal right until the last pages, keeping the reader deliciously hooked.

What makes this novel sing is Anupama’s classic wit. Uff! Too good! I kid not!

Anupama peppers the narrative with puns, modern lingo, and sly observations without ever breaking the story’s momentum. The prose is simple yet racy, with tight narration that keeps you turning pages fast.

In the end, Padma’s journey is both unique and universal, a reminder that while we can’t control life’s plot twists, we can absolutely choose our responses. And sometimes, that’s the happy ending we didn’t know we needed. Right?

Each story carries its own flavour, tone, and tempo. From the choppy waters of the 1971 Indo-Pak war to the quiet agony of a woman navigating life as a sailor’s wife, the themes are wide-ranging, yet deeply human. There's even a tale set in the 16th century involving two sailing ships and a historic battle.
The standout story for me was The GM Diet, a quirky tale crafted with humour. It captivated me completely. Another favourite was There and Back, which explores the emotional landscape of Jaya, a young woman married to a sailor. Her resilience, loneliness, and quiet strength are portrayed with such empathy that you can’t help but admire her.
The author’s strength lies in his lived experience, and it shows. The sea isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a character. The scent of salt in the air, the rumble of engines, the quiet solitude of open waters, the ache of separation from land and loved ones—all are rendered in vivid detail. The narration is crisp, immersive, and emotionally rich.
What truly elevates the book is its heart. There’s no melodrama, just authentic voices and poignant moments that stay with you. The stories shine a light on how ordinary joys—greenery, home-cooked food, a hug—become extraordinary for those who live away from land for months on end.
Complementing the storytelling is the beautiful artwork that precedes each chapter. These visuals enhance the reading experience, adding texture and mood to the narrative.

At its core is Ramakrishna, a mild-mannered teacher whose life takes a gruesome turn when his bride, Nazm, is brutally murdered on their wedding night. What follows is not just a quest for justice but a descent into madness, as he joins forces with the enigmatic and morally volatile "Coffee Man." Their alliance is uneasy, their methods more so. Meanwhile, another thread—a renunciate turned vigilante, obsessed with vengeance—interweaves with their tale, setting the stage for an eventual crescendo of carnage and confrontation.

What truly stands out in Berserk is Priyadarshi’s mastery over character and tone. Ramakrishna’s psychological disintegration is handled with remarkable precision. His quirks, vulnerabilities, and internal conflicts are rendered in a way that draws the reader in slowly and thoroughly—until you realize, with some alarm, that you're thinking like him.
The tone is consistent throughout, maintaining an oppressive intensity that never once slackens. Whether set in the bustling lanes of Mumbai or the quieter corners of Bangalore, the atmospheric settings are detailed and immersive, grounding the reader in the reality of the cities even as the story spirals into psychological chaos.

Language-wise, the prose is unpretentious, which works to its advantage. The storytelling leans towards ‘tell’ over ‘show’—a deliberate and effective choice when the goal is to place readers inside a disintegrating mind. The effect is claustrophobic and compelling. The more you read, the more you find yourself succumbing to Ramakrishna’s unravelling logic.

Even the cover design deserves a nod—it’s ominous, evocative, and aptly aligned with the book’s central themes of madness and vengeance.

That said, Berserk comes with fair warning. The violence is explicit and frequent—disturbingly so at times. It’s not just graphic; it feels personal, almost sadistically detailed. This is not horror for the faint-hearted, but for those who can stomach psychological torment delivered with surgical precision. Similarly, the intimate scenes, while narratively justified, are vividly portrayed and can be discomfiting, especially for readers unaccustomed to such visceral storytelling.

In sum, Berserk is a bold and bloody foray into the dark recesses of grief, rage, and human fragility. It’s not an easy read—but it packs a wallop. Sangeetha recounts every story with authenticity, from irate passengers to curious beggars, from ant-covered corpses to office pranks, from chitranna tiffins to chai breaks (with dunked MilkBikis) standing on a dusty platform, under a pendulous fan, creaking its protests. You feel her fatigue, her triumphs, and the many moments of quiet learning.
I haven’t enjoyed reading a memoir as much as I enjoyed reading this book. Sangeetha’s voice, rooted in reality and laced with memories, quietly yet stubbornly earns our respect. Rich with the knowledge of a life, lived well, aching with the loss of those gone, and rife with chuckles and laughter- this book warms the cockles of the heart. It is a ticket to cherished memories of bygone days wrapped in the scent of nostalgia. It is a reminder that sometimes the most profound stories come from the humblest of places. Life writes them. We only narrate them.
So, pick this book up. Sit with it in the quieter moments and read it slowly. Don’t rush. This isn’t a racy novel. This is someone’s life on paper. Give it the respect it has earned by savouring the words on each page slowly. Let them seep in and percolate. Let them linger as they tickle your memories.

Srivalli wrote Srivalli’s ‘The scattered purple flowers’ is a 117 pages long compilation of poetic verses that serenade nature, tickle the funny bone, and pay a tribute to survivors of abuse, genocide, etc. The poems are an ode to free verse poetry. Srivalli wrote these poems in response to various prompts during the NaPoWriMo events on the ArtoonsInn writing platform between 2023 and 2024. This is her second poetry anthology after ‘Violets in Hand’.
The first section, ‘An ode to nature’ speaks about the sun, the stars, the wilderness, the rainbow and other elements that celebrate nature’s resplendence. My favourite poem in this section is ‘The nameless night bird’, written in Srivalli’s favourite poetic style – the chant. Another poem that touched my heart was ‘Starlight’.
The second section, ‘Lost in memories in a place called home’, speaks about memories, longing for home, childhood, a mother-daughter bond and also gives the readers a glimpse into Srivalli’s childhood (as many poems in this section are deeply personal).
‘Tickle the funny bone’, the third section, has poems that evoke chuckles and laughter. I loved the poem, ‘A joke that wasn’t’ … Ha! Ha! The poem, ‘Pollen-y spring’ read like an ode to allergies which I too have suffered and hence I could identify with this poem.
The fourth section, ‘Shh! It’s not personal!’, has poems on memories, nostalgia, solitude, aspirations, heartache and forgiveness.
The fifth section, ‘It is supposed to hurt’, makes you sit up and take note after the deliberate attempt to lull your senses. The attempt works. This section has poems that trigger grief, anguish, and revulsion. The poetic styles are distinct, a ghazal, a tanka, a viator, etc. The author based many of these poems on real-life incidents.
The sixth section, ‘puzzle pieces that won’t fit’, decries the noise that surrounds us, cautions us to slow our pace and to erect boundaries. The poems in this section are a melange of topics, but the thread of life connects them all.
The seventh section, ‘In the space between’, contains poems that speak of love, loss, mourning, uncomfortable silences, etc. My favourite in this section is ‘Would I love you any less’, again a chant style poem. I have to say that this is my favourite section in the book.
