Williams, tells a story that's in many ways still timely and relevant today. In it, Caroline McAllister works alongside her husband, Andrew, in their thriving photography business. It's an unusual profession for a woman of her time, and even more so considering when Caroline views her subjects through the lens of her antique camera, she is able to see ghosts. It's a gift she's had since childhood, but one that went dormant for many years. Thus, when spirits begin appearing to her again, and in particular, the ghostly image of a mysterious woman, she suspects she's being contacted for a reason. When she learns that years earlier, Andrew and a group of his close-knit friends had been in the company of a woman who tragically drowned, she realizes the victim may be the enigmatic figure she keep seeing. And as the truth of that terrible accident slowly comes to light -- seeming not so accidental at all -- Caroline discovers the drowning victim's ghost may be seeking vengeance on the those she deems responsible, including Caroline's own husband.

"Darkroom Phantoms" is a charming and well-written mystery. There's no gore or jump scares, but plenty of ghostly phenomena and intrigue. Caroline is a clever, resourceful, and capable sleuth, and as she learns more about the spectral woman and its intentions, she also learns more about Andrew -- and herself. How well do any of us really know those we are closest to, even love?

As a history buff, I especially enjoyed the setting of this story. During this time period, post-mortem photography was popular, and family members often posed with deceased loved ones to preserve one last commemorative portrait together. It seems like a morbid tradition to us now, but through Caroline's viewpoint, Williams reflects on how it often served to bring closure to grieving families. In the time period in which the story is set, Prohibition has yet to occur, but through a subplot in which Caroline and her friend pretend to be newspaper reporters working on a story about the dangers of alcohol, Williams reveals the socio-political and moral arguments that helped facilitate the "tee-totaler" movement in American society. She's clearly done her homework, and "Darkroom Phantoms" presents a unique historical perspective, in addition to a chilling supernatural mystery.

If you're looking for slashers, masked killers, final girls, or the walking dead, this isn't the book for you. But if you appreciate a quieter kind of horror, one in which the dead whisper in riddles and it's up to the living to unravel the meanings, and a heroine who comes into her own much as the women of her time found societal empowerment, then "Darkroom Phantoms" should be at the top of your "must read" list. ...more

With the upcoming streaming series "Crystal Lake" tackling a new pe As a horror movie fan, I love to see some of the franchises I loved in years past being rediscovered by today's audiences, and enjoying a Renaissance of sorts in terms of popularity. With the upcoming streaming series "Crystal Lake" tackling a new perspective on the over-trodden "Friday the 13th" story, and recent new entries into the "Scream," "Evil Dead," and "Resident Evil" film series, it's not only fun to see fresh life breathed into old favorites, but to catch up with fondly remembered, familiar characters who've been brought back into the fold. Granted, those are often just cameo appearances, and true, it can be a bit of a culture shock to see that characters we remember only too well as fresh-faced girls have morphed into middle-aged women teetering on the brink of menopause, but hell, life catches up to all of us eventually, even if slasher killers like Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers never did.

This exact nostalgia, along with the harsher realities of life beyond the big screen, are at the heart of "Savage Voyage," author Cassandra O'Sullivan Sachar's upcoming new release. In "Savage Voyage," Hilary Hansen is a former scream queen, whose role as Jenna O'Malley. the plucky final girl in a series of late 1990s "Savage" slasher flicks granted her a fleeting glimpse of Hollywood stardom. These days, however, the bright lights are behind Hilary, and she works as a housekeeper, scrubbing toilets and polishing grout in posh homes she can't afford to even dream about owning. She's had a downturn in luck since her "Savage" starlet days, and faces mounting medical bills after her daughter is severely injured in a car crash. Thus, when a mysterious and wealthy benefactor, "Mr. Calhoun," sends an envoy to offer Hilary the chance to be his V.I.P. guest on a tropical cruise themed entirely around the "Savage" movies, she can hardly resist.

She's tempted to, however. Her days as Jenna O'Malley have left emotional scars on her psyche for a number of reasons revealed through the course of the story. Revisiting that time in her life will only reopen old wounds, she knows, yet the money is too good to pass up, especially since it will go toward benefitting her daughter. Reluctantly, she accepts, agreeing to attend cocktail parties, meet-and-greets, autograph sessions, and roundtable discussions with fans of the film series, as well as past costars, aboard the luxury cruise ship the "Savage Voyage."

Seeing old friends from the films isn't as horrible as Hilary first feared, and just when she begins to think maybe this wasn't such a bad idea after all, embracing her past and all the tried-and-true fans who remain faithfully adoring. Then she walks into her ship cabin and finds a dead body in her bed--a man who's been murdered in a shockingly gruesome manner eerily reminiscent of a kill scene from one of the "Savage" movies. More deaths quickly follow, and it becomes evident that someone on board the ship is more than just a passing fan of the films--they mean to reenact the carnage in real life. Hilary finds herself reluctantly taking up the banner of final girl again, and this time, it's not just for the camera.

This was a wickedly fun read. O'Sullivan Sachar knows how to pivot from lighthearted to dark and twisted in the flip of a page. Hilary is a hero who's easy to cheer on, and a far more developed and nuanced character than any hapless coed in a B-grade movie. She's smart, strong, capable, and fierce, and the most fun comes from watching as she slowly realizes all of that for herself. This ain't your grandmother's final girl. This is a final woman, through and through, and a badass one at that.

"Savage Voyage" releases November 15. It's available for preorder now. ...more

How unlucky can one man be? And is misfortune really no more than happenstance, a series of ill-fated circumstances, or could there be something more sinister at play? These questions have plagued George Rockwell, the main character in "The Harbinger How unlucky can one man be? And is misfortune really no more than happenstance, a series of ill-fated circumstances, or could there be something more sinister at play? These questions have plagued George Rockwell, the main character in "The Harbinger" by Kyle Rolantis, since he was a young boy. When George and his childhood friend sneak into an old barn George's father has forbidden them to enter, they discover nothing inside except a raven flying through the rafters. The raven escapes thanks to George's trespass, and within short order after that, George's sister, mother, and grandfather begin dying off. These losses, and the growing suspicions that not only were they tied to the raven somehow, but that George himself was partially to blame for setting it free, haunt George well into adulthood. His guilt and self-loathing cause him to pursue reckless, self-destructive behaviors, like cheating on his loving wife, who is carrying their first child, and over-indulging in drugs and alcohol. When he begins to see an all-too familiar raven that seems to follow wherever he goes, George's behaviors, like his sanity, begin spiraling out of control. Has his family been forever cursed by the vengeful harbinger raven? And if so, how can George hope to find escape -- or redemption?

"The Harbinger" plays out like a fable. Is George doomed because of the raven, or are his miseries on his own account? It's difficult to tell, even by the end of the story, because Rolantis does a great job portraying George as a thoroughly unlikable protagonist. He's self-centered and selfish, both squandering and discounting the things in life that should bring him pride or joy. The reader watches as he unravels, and even though it's his story, we wind up feeling more sympathy for his beleaguered wife, if not outright rooting for the raven. If George's family truly is cursed, it's easy to understand why someone would have wanted to, especially if the fruit doesn't fall far from the proverbial tree.

I found this to be a dark, brooding exploration of grief, loss, and self-destruction, and how our own behaviors can lead to a much crueler downfall than anything wished upon us in malice. Rolantis writes well, and it's a short, quick read that's perfectly at home as we head into spooky season. ...more

Her latest r "The Rotting Room" by Viggy Parr Hampton was my favorite read from last year, so I'm not going to lie. To me, she's one of the top voices in indie horror, but not only that: she's one of the most imaginative and versatile authors around. Her latest release, "Ripped Up The Middle in Two," is no exception.

The story, in part, taps into the fiercely debated public conversation surrounding Lindsay Clancy's murder trial. While the timing is unintentional on Parr Hampton's part, and nothing short of coincidence, "Ripped Up The Middle in Two" explores the same themes of post-partum depression and psychosis. Beyond that, however, through the book, Parr Hampton also addresses the often unflattering and sometimes brutal realities of motherhood itself.

In "Ripped Up The Middle in Two," new mother Sadie is a one-time successful businesswoman who has set all of her professional ambitions and aspirations aside to stay home and raise her sweet, cherubic daughter Holly. Sadie is still recovering from the very-real physical complications of having given birth (like an episiotomy, sore nipples, and engorged, leaking breasts), and also struggling with what was once dismissively referred to as "the baby blues." The fluctuations in her hormones leave her struggling with debilitating depression one minute, and unadulterated adoration for Holly in the next, and in between these peaks and valleys, Sadie finds herself desperate for uninterrupted sleep, plagued with self loathing, and faced with crippling loneliness.

Complicating matters is Sadie's husband, Cash, who, for all practical purposes, seems well-intentioned, but spends more time on the golf course than he does with his beleaguered wife and new daughter. When he tries to "help," it usually causes more problems than it solves, leaving Sadie even more frustrated and closer to her breaking point.

She finds comfort in her neighbor and friend, Kendall, with who she shared "crafternoons" in which they try to replicate those annoying kitschy and cute arts and crafts projects we've all seen on the internet. But what Sadie really longs for is the friendship and camaraderie of another neighbor named Jessica who is beautiful, fit, effortlessly fashionable, and always surrounded by an entourage of wine-sipping besties with perfect hair, dental veneers, acrylic nails, and Lululemon ensembles. Sadie and Kendall call Jessica and her crew the "Yoga Moms," and they are everything Sadie isn't, and more importantly, everything she wants to be. Thus, in an attempt to impress and charm Jessica and her gang, Sadie decides on a new craft project: hand-painted fairy doors which she plans to install throughout the neighborhood.

Fairy doors are, as you might expect, miniature doors you can affix to garden walls, flower beds, or tree trunks. They'd decorative and cute, and Sadie fantasizes about how delighted and charmed Jessica and the Yoga Moms will be when she's done hammering them into trees throughout the subdivision. While she's out on a walk with Holly, setting the fairy doors into place, she happens upon an unusual trail in a wooded area in the neighborhood. Curiosity piqued, she takes her stroller off-road to explore.

At the end of the path, she finds a strange, sinister-looking tree. Fashioned into the base of the trunk is a miniature door -- not one of the charming, brightly colored fairy doors she herself has crafted, but something rustic, even ominous.

From there, the story follows its own winding path through dark and treacherous terrain, as Sadie begins first to imagine what might live on the other side of that creepy little door, then begins to dream about something monstrous emerging from beyond its threshold. She begins to find evidence, first throughout the neighborhood, then closer to home, of something malevolent that's taken interest in her and Holly. As that dark entity encroaches further into Sadie's life, she begins to spiral more and more out of control.

"Ripped Up The Middle in Two" is a fairy tale, only the dark, twisted variety the Grimm brothers originally intended. There are no cute, woodland fae folk in Parr Hampton 's book; instead, she brings the legends back to their medieval roots, when fairies and pixies were spiteful and wicked, preying on humans, and coveting children for their own dark purposes. The true terror, however, lies in the fact that as readers, we can't tell if the things Sadie witnesses and experiences are real, or if they're only occurring in her mind, if between hormones, exhaustion, marital strife, and stress, she's just been taxed to the brink. Or if, when she finally loses it, what horrific end will be the result.

I hadn't thought there was any way Parr Hampton could top "The Rotting Room" in my esteem, but she did with "Ripped Up The Middle in Two." It's a brilliant book. As a wife, woman, and mother, I identified with Sade's struggles, sorrows, and frustrations. And as a horror fan -- and unapologetic Parr Hampton fangirl -- I couldn't stop reading, because I had to know what happened next. As usual, she keeps you guessing in all the best ways. ...more

Rudolph's novel promises its guests not just weight loss, but a complete life makeover, rebuilding overweight participants into lean, mean, healthy machines. With advertisements promising Michelin-star quality dining, luxurious amenities, state-of-the-art fitness training, and a scenic, isolated setting, it sounds too good to be true. Thus when main character Alana qualifies to attend one of The Camp's 3-week sessions, she leaps at the chance. She's tired of being overweight and feels like she's lost out on opportunities both in her career and personal life because of her size. She wants to change for good, and feels she's willing to do whatever it takes to achieve this.

For better or worse, The Camp is going to demand that of her.

"The Camp" is a slow burn at first, warmly welcoming readers just as the program's director and staff greet Alana and eleven other guests to the facility. Readers get to know a little about Alana and her new friends, including Sage and Gabby, all of whom have spent years struggling with their weight. Through therapy sessions included in the Camp's regimented program, we learn about their insecurities and fears, and through their tough physical training, we come to realize that, just like Alana, everyone else at the Camp is doing their best to change themselves for the better.

Anyone who ever watched the TV reality show "The Biggest Loser" knows that things don't ever go that easily for very long. When the going gets tough, some participants want to slack off or give up. At regular weigh-in sessions, Alana and the group aren't told how much, if any weight they've managed to lose, and instead are only told if they "pass," or meet their pre-determined metrics, or "fail." Fail once, and you get a warning. Twice, and you're taken for "intensive" individual therapy. Three times, and you're terminated from the program, no refunds, no redos.

Alana's friend Gabby is the first in their bunch to fail twice. And while neither Alana nor the others are privy as to what the "intensive" therapy Gabby is forced to endure entails, the readers are. And it's horrific.

This is where the story takes a very dark turn. Without excessive gore or crossing into extreme territory, Rudolph still manages to conjure up some of the most genuinely terrifying and disturbing scenes I have ever read. And as one by one, other characters begin to fail, earning therapy sessions of their own, Rudolph ups the horror ante, creating one nightmarish hellscape after another, each customized to meet each helpless victim's specific, individualized fears.

Without giving much away, suffice it to say it becomes a race against time for Alana and her friends to not only discover the horrifying truth behind The Camp's posh facade, but also escape before they become its next victims.

"The Camp" scared the hell out of me. The creatures Rudolph has dreamed up, and the level of sadistic depravity to which her demented antagonists will stoop are absolutely chilling. Again, it's worth pointing out that she achieves these things without excessive amounts of gore. That's truly remarkable. Developing that kind of sinister, all-encompassing dread takes incredible skill, not just as a writer, but as a storyteller, and Rudolph does a phenomenal job.

What makes "The Camp" such an unsettling, difficult read is the fact that Alana and her friends are so likable and identifiable, even if you've never struggled a day in your life feeling fat or unattractive or never quite good enough. As a reader, I empathized with Alana, and rooted for her. I wanted her to not only beat the system at its own game, but come out the other side triumphant, not just surviving but filled with newfound self love and acceptance. Watching her struggle, reading about all the terrible, horrible, very bad things that happen to her and her friends is like witnessing these occurrences to people you personally know and love.

Rudolph's writing, for all its dark elements, is amazing. Her characters are all richly developed and unique. Her descriptions of The Camp itself, the technology it employs, the landscape surrounding it, and the multitude of settings within its walls are mesmerizing and immersive in their detail. You feel as if you're right there in the thick of things -- which makes it even more awful when everything starts to spiral out of control.

Rudolph has several other titles beneath her belt, which makes me happy-dance, because I love finding new-to-me authors whose backlists I can binge-read. She's definitely earned a spot on my auto-buy list. "The Camp" is the most terrifying book I've read this year, and just landed near the top of my favorite reads list. ...more

It's a quiet, brooding, introspective study on the tolls of an immortal lifetime not just on the individual doomed to endure it, but on those with whom they build and foster genuine relationships.

At first, "Perspective: A Vampire Novella" by Kevin J. Kennedy touches on similar themes. A lonely man recovering from years of self-loathing and depression meets Samantha, a beautiful redheaded woman at his local gym. One thing leads to another, and he discovers she's a vampire. When she bites him, it's not out of bloodlust or frenzy, but rather because she likes him, enjoys his company, and wants it to continue. With this newfound lease on a life that's practically immortal, he gladly accompanies her on a whirlwind trip through Europe, where the two sightsee, hunt, and party with abandon. Along the way, they are introduced to a pair of werewolves who are also traveling for leisure, and a mutual friendship develops among them.

Shortly after this, the story switches tacks, becoming less like "Only Lovers Left Alive" and more like "Underworld," or other action-oriented vampire flicks. When the enigmatic ruler of a subterranean demonic horde tries to recruit Samantha, the narrator, and their friends into the ranks of a supernatural army, they find themselves forced to choose sides and fight.

Samantha is a fun character: confident, strong-willed, and fierce. There's a certain aloof swagger about her that obviously comes from having not just lived, but survived for a very long time. In the story's beginning, when the narrator tries to intervene and protect her when an ex-lover tries to rough her up, she's caught by surprise by his would-be chivalry, and charmed. She doesn't need his help (being perfectly capable of fending for herself) and he gets his ass kicked in the process, but she's still touched by the gesture, and, I suspect, surprised by a human for the first in a very long time.

Elena, one of the werewolves they meet on their travels, was another character I enjoyed. She's carefree, vivacious, and utterly fearless, sometimes to her own detriment, and it's interesting to contrast her with both her companion and Samantha, who are both obviously much older, world-weary, and wise, but who look upon her antics with a sort of patient adoration.

"Perspective" is a quick read, but Kennedy provides plenty of action (both of the fighting and knocking boots variety). Despite its short length, Kennedy gives us great character development and an undeniably distinct mythos in terms of worldbuilding. The story feels like a prequel of sorts, as if the opening salvo in a longer work or series, which would be really fun to see. I know I'd sure be down for some further adventures of Samantha and Elena. ...more
