I use them to kind of get the juices flowing. Many of them are not what I would typically write but it allows me to be creative. I just free write using the prompt.

Another thing I do to knock out the cobwebs it to write word-for-word from a book I love. For example, I love the Outlander series. If I'm feeling stuck creatively, I'll open to any page in one of the books, and just type everything on the page. Of course, this is strictly for my own purposes and it doesn't go anywhere. I would never copy anyone's work. But it allows me to get the flow of the words, the emotion, the setting, etc. It often will help me break through that block.(less)

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Dana Armstrong Anything goes! As a writer of fiction, I can dream up anything and wrap it up into a story. I love that freedom.
