I am a writer of poetry, plays, libretti and non-fiction, and I am the founder of Amherst Writers and Artists. For thirty-four years I have taught writing in Massachusetts and around the world.

My two best-known books are about writing, both from Oxford University Press. My new book, HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN: WRITING AS A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE, offers seventeen chapters that engage the connection between writing and spirituality, regardless of one’s religious tradition or one’s level of expertise in writing. Chapter one takes Einstein’s statement,

My Interview on Aging with Tara Backes for her “Ageless Women” series

I was honored many weeks ago to be interviewed by Tara Backes for the Ageless Women online summit. She’s graciously sent me a copy of the video she made; I’m sharing it with you here. The interview is about 40 minutes long. Enjoy!

“It is a kind of love, is it not?
How the cup holds the tea,
How the chair stands sturdy and foursquare,
How the floor receives the bottoms of shoes
Or toes. How soles of feet know
Where they're supposed to be.
I've been thinking about the patience
Of ordinary things, how clothes
Wait respectfully in closets
And soap dries quietly in the dish,
And towels drink the wet
From the skin of the back.
And the lovely repetition of stairs.
And what is more generous than a window?”
Pat Schneider, Another River

“I learned without her saying a word that there are truly many ways to pray, and lighting a candle is one of them.”
Pat Schneider, How the Light Gets In: Writing as a Spiritual Practice

“Be led by your joy.”

message 2: by Pat

Pat Schneider Thank you for this generous response, Nadine. It was a truly overwhelming and beautiful evening.

Nadine Most wonderful book launch Friday 4/5/13 at Smith with Pat Schneider telling a large group of friends and admirers about her latest HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN. I am reading it now and loving it. Writing is painful sometimes, before, during and after but sometimes it's a mysterious adventure.
