History, especially the 20th Century, is a real passion for me. Yet I didn't start writing about it until quite recently because my career as a journalist and editor took up all my waking hours! I started out as a feature writer, in Sydney Australia, on magazines like Woman's Day, Cosmopolitan and Rolling Stone and my career as a columnist and movie writer took me all over the world for many years until I arrived back where I started, in London, England and various editing jobs on mass market magagines like Bella and Me. Then I freelanced for many years for many major newspapers and magazines. In 2005, I decided there was a real need for an informative self help book for families with older parents and my first book, Time to Help Your Paren ...more

If something tells me 'just leave it', I do! Fortunately, when I'm firing on all cylinders I can make up for the flat or do little days.(less)

Hi Stacy,

As long as you continue to attribute my name and the book title to anything you write, I am happy to help. If you are writing about working women post WW2, the last chapters of Bombsites are useful, in that there was a huge boom in London for office workers in the early 60s. For the first time, young school leavers, ie typists and secretaries, were earning salaries that enabled them to splash out on fashionable clothes, etc. The Swinging London phenomenon was partly due to this surge in consumer spending by youngsters. My follow up to Bombsites, White Boots & Mini Skirts, which starts in 1966, gives a very clear picture of working life for young girls in London back then. Email me direct, please on jrhyams@gmail.com if you have any more questions. I don't use GoodReads very much.

FRANCES

Fifty years ago, a 21 year old woman, a stunningly beautiful bride, walked down the aisle of an East End church to marry a handsome but notorious criminal.

Following a courtship which had lasted seven years, Frances Shea had finally tied the knot with Reggie Kray, one half of the notorious Kray twins duo, the East End gangsters who terrorised London in the Fifties and Sixties.

“The general foreman was a terror to almost everyone, especially us lads. A dreaded punishment for misbehaviour was to be taken to the main floor, issued with a hacksaw and about a dozen blades. A long dural block was then marked off by the toolmakers and the lad earmarked for punishment was set the job of sawing, with a demanded standard of accuracy, the whole length of it. This certainly made us think more than twice about stepping out of line in working hours.”
