The way they end up pretending to date was actually pretty funny, and I liked that it came from something quite natural instead of some huge misunderstanding.

I really liked Jo and her job as the team photographer. It’s a nice change from romances where the heroine is only connected to hockey because she’s the player’s girlfriend, sister or neighbor. Her job actually has a place in the story, and I really liked that. However, I do have a little problem with the hockey romance part. I felt like hockey was actually not very present in the story. There is maybe one game, and it goes pretty quickly, we barely hear about Nico’s teammates and, apart from him being a professional hockey player and Jo working for the team, the story could almost have taken place in any other environment. And that’s a bit of a shame because I really liked the hockey setting and I would have liked to have more of it. When I read a hockey romance, I kind of want… hockey, you know?

I still really liked the characters. Jo can be a little bit cliché sometimes, but not enough to really bother me. And I liked Nico a lot too, even if his constant need for Jo to thank him for everything annoyed me a little sometimes. Jo’s family… oh my god. I don’t think I’ve hated a family this much in a romance in a long time. Between the harassment she gets from them and everything they make her deal with, I really wanted to jump into the book and tell them to calm down for two seconds. And Nico putting them back in their place? YES. Thank you. That was so satisfying!!

More seriously, I really liked the way the romance deals with harassment and the impact it can have on your self-confidence. Jo has a really hard time getting away from what she is going through and believing in herself again, and Nico helps her a lot with that. And that’s exactly what I liked: he is there for her, he supports her and encourages her, but he never becomes her savior. I really like that kind of difference in romance, especially when the heroine is going through something as difficult as this.

Nico is honestly a big green flag in many ways. He respects Jo, listens to her, lets her make her own choices and doesn’t try to decide things for her. Okay, he can maybe stop with the “Say thank you” though.

So overall, I had a really good time with this romance. There are a few things that made me stop and go “hmm”, especially the fact that I wanted more hockey, but I really liked the dynamic between Jo and Nico, the fake dating and especially the way their relationship helps Jo slowly get her confidence back. ...more

Bon, Game Changer, c’est un peu particulier pour moi.

J’ai découvert Rachel Reid avec la série Heated Rivalry, dont j’ai fait mon entière personnalité pendant plusieurs mois. Du coup forcément, j’ai voulu lire les livres. Et comme je suis une personne Bon, Game Changer, c’est un peu particulier pour moi.

J’ai découvert Rachel Reid avec la série Heated Rivalry, dont j’ai fait mon entière personnalité pendant plusieurs mois. Du coup forcément, j’ai voulu lire les livres. Et comme je suis une personne parfaitement normale et organisée, j’ai commencé par le tome 2, puis le tome 6, qui sont tous les deux centrés sur Shane et Ilya, avant de me dire qu’il serait peut-être temps de revenir au début de la série... Et c’est là que ça s’est un peu compliqué.

Game Changer suit Scott, star du hockey professionnel qui vit encore dans le placard, et Kip, un barista avec qui il commence une relation qu’il veut absolument garder secrète. Le livre explore donc leur relation, mais aussi tout ce que ça implique pour Scott de vivre son homosexualité dans un milieu sportif très masculin et devoir constamment jongler entre ce qu’il ressent et l’image qu’il doit renvoyer.

Sur le fond, j’ai trouvé l’histoire sympa et je comprends totalement pourquoi elle fonctionne. Il y a des choses intéressantes autour du coming out, de la peur de perdre sa carrière, de la pression liée à l’image publique et de la difficulté à construire une relation quand l’un des deux doit constamment se cacher. Mais j’ai eu beaucoup plus de mal à accrocher à Scott et Kip qu’à Shane et Ilya. Leur histoire m’a semblé un peu plus plate, avec moins de cette dynamique qui m'a fait complètement vriller dans la série. Et forcément, quand tu arrives après avoir découvert Ilya et Shane, la comparaison est assez violente. Et puis on va pas se mentir, le fait de déjà connaître leur relation avec la série, c'était plus compliqué de s'y replonger à l'écrit quand tu sais déjà tout et que c'est assez "calme".

Cela dit, l’audio était une bonne manière de découvrir ce tome. Je pense que si j’avais essayé de le terminer en papier (j'avais lu 30% en papier vo), j’aurais probablement ramé beaucoup plus longtemps. Là, ça s’écoute bien, c’est fluide et ça m’a permis d’avancer assez facilement. Par contre, je suis un peu déçue par la traduction française. Il y a plusieurs formulations qui m’ont fait tiquer, cette histoire de temps aussi... Et alors le smut en VF audio… tellement cringe. ...more

Jusqu’au jour où elle commence à avoir l’impression d’être suivie, puis à retrouver des choses déplacées chez elle, des éléments qui apparaissent sans qu’elle sache pourquoi… et surtout à se demander si quelqu’un cherche réellement à la faire perdre pied.

J’ai passé un bon moment avec ce thriller. L’histoire est assez courte, les chapitres s’enchaînent rapidement donc un bon point. Les différents points de vue donnent vraiment envie de continuer pour comprendre comment tout ça va finir par se rejoindre (même si honnêtement je me suis doutée assez vite de la tournure des évènements...). L’histoire joue avec ce qu’on croit comprendre d’Anaïs et de ce qui lui arrive. Il y a plusieurs retournements de situation et, même si, comme j'ai dit, j’en ai vu venir certains, j’ai quand même été surprise par plusieurs éléments de la résolution. Le suspense fonctionne donc plutôt bien.

J’ai aussi bien aimé l’ambiance du roman aussi : Liverpool, les Beatles, la musicologie, c'est sympa je trouve.

Finalement là où ça pêche le plus pour moi c'est les personnages. J’ai trouvé qu’ils manquaient parfois un peu de profondeur... Ça aurait permis, selon moi, de mieux comprendre leurs motivations et leurs réactions, surtout que l’intrigue repose beaucoup sur ce qu’ils cachent et sur ce qu’on pense savoir d’eux. J’ai aussi trouvé que certaines révélations arrivaient assez vite et que la fin aurait mérité un peu plus de temps pour être développée.

Ça reste malgré tout une lecture que j’ai trouvée prenante et efficace. Pas forcément le thriller qui va me retourner le cerveau pendant trois semaines, mais j’ai passé un bon moment à essayer de comprendre où l’autrice voulait m’emmener. L’adoption, la peur de l’abandon, le deuil, les traumatismes, les relations toxiques, la santé mentale… ce sont des sujets assez lourds, mais qui sont vraiment au cœur de l’histoire et pas juste utilisés comme background pour donner du drama aux personnages. J’ai particulièrement apprécié tout ce qui touche à Lee et à ses questionnements autour de son identité et de son histoire. Il y a quelque chose de très humain dans sa manière de gérer ses émotions, parfois pas très bien, et dans cette peur constante de perdre les gens auxquels il s’attache.

Chani m’a également beaucoup plu. J’ai aimé découvrir son passé petit à petit, notamment tout ce qui concerne son ancienne relation et ce qu’elle a laissé derrière elle. Son rapport au combat est aussi intéressant parce qu’il ne sert pas uniquement à construire son personnage de femme forte qui sait mettre des coups de poing. Il y a tout ce que le combat représente pour elle, ce qu’elle a perdu, ce qu’elle essaie de reconstruire et la place qu’elle veut désormais occuper.

Et surtout, j’ai beaucoup aimé leur relation. Ils ont tous les deux leurs casseroles, mais ils ne sont pas là pour se “réparer” magiquement l’un l’autre. Leur évolution se fait progressivement, avec leurs peurs, leurs mauvais réflexes et leurs moments où ils ne savent clairement pas quoi faire de leurs émotions. J’ai trouvé ça assez touchant de les voir essayer d’avancer malgré tout.

J’ai aussi beaucoup aimé les personnages secondaires, notamment la famille de Lee et le meilleur ami de Chani. Ils apportent vraiment quelque chose à l’histoire et permettent de voir les personnages principaux sous d’autres angles.

J’ai écouté le livre en audio et j’ai beaucoup apprécié les deux narrateurs. Ils donnent vraiment vie à Lee et Chani et rendent l’écoute très immersive. Il y a quelques longueurs par moments et certains éléments auraient peut-être mérité d’être davantage développés, notamment la question du diagnostic et de la confirmation nécessaire par un·e psychiatre, mais ça ne m’a pas empêchée de rester investie dans l’histoire.

C’est une romance assez intense, avec pas mal de sujets difficiles, mais aussi beaucoup de personnages auxquels on finit par s’attacher. J’ai eu le cœur serré plusieurs fois, particulièrement avec Lee, et j’ai vraiment aimé les voir essayer de se reconstruire petit à petit.
