The poem "My First Year Teaching Seventh-Grade English" is based on a classroom experience from many years ago that stuck with me. When I don't feel like writing, reading someone else's poetry is a surefire way to reignite my excitement.(less)

When I get excited about a good poem, it often sparks an idea for me—usually totally unrelated to what I am reading.

Another strategy that helps is taking a walk (sometimes with my dog Lila). If I am working on a draft of a poem and I get stuck, often I can work out where to go next, either with an idea or an image, or sometimes a phrase, while I am walking. Physical movement begets poetic progress.(less)

Kansas Poems Kansas Poems by Brian Daldorph

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In KANSAS POEMS, Brian Daldorph evokes the moods, the places, and the seasons of his adopted home state. This strong collection was named a finalist for The Birdy Poetry Prize by Meadowlark Books, and reading it is like taking a guided tour through Kansas, both its present and its past.
