At the moment I have an idea for a story set in the Caspian Republic but it won't be my next book, or the one after or probably even the one after that. I do have a title though: Yozhik.

The trouble is, at the moment I know WHAT I would write, basically Yozhik's story running parallel to Nicky South's but I don't yet know WHY. As in, why tell this story? What would this character's journey reveal that wasn't already present in Sparrow? I don't have the answer to that yet, but I hope it will come to me eventually. I do love Caspian, and I'm sure one day I'll be back tramping through the misty streets of Ellulgrad, with one eye cast over my shoulder to make sure The Bastards aren't following me.(less)

I find if you work on two projects simultaneously, you trick your brain into working on one to avoid working on the other (the one you work on will, without fail, be the one with the less pressing deadline).(less)

New York Public Library Interview and New Podcast Episode

Hey everyone! Firstly, apologies for the delay with this episode, we were beset with all manner of plagues and misfortunes (Esther literally couldn’t speak for weeks). How long did this episode take us to upload? So long that when we recorded it there was a heatwave on. That, incidentally, is why you’ll hear me say that Tony Jay voiced Quasimodo and not Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, becau

“Nominally, the currency of the Caspian Republic was the moneta, but in truth the coin of the nation was fear. Whoever could inspire fear was rich, whoever lived in fear was poor.”
Neil Sharpson, When the Sparrow Falls

“Power is a poison.”
Neil Sharpson, When the Sparrow Falls

“Ah, there was the word. “Family.” It was an old Irish word. It meant: “Do nothing. Challenge nothing. Change nothing.” Ireland was a rocky garden, dig a few inches deep and you found stone; solid and impassable. And carved into its face, as like as not; the word FAMILY.”

Topics Mentioning This Author

“Yes, it would look like she was smuggling an ostrich with a tarp on it into a motel room, but this also looked like the type of establishment to not particularly judge for that sort of thing.”

Neil Sharpson, When the Sparrow Falls

“She tried not to think in capital letters. It was a bad habit. If you weren’t careful, pretty soon you’d find yourself Going to the Store to Buy a Carton of Milk—or worse, speaking German.”
