Scorpio - resident of Oxfordshire - writer of political satire. In my first two novels the satire happened to emerge in the form of sci-fi - but next time, who knows. Could be fantasy, could be something else.

Am feeling a bit pigeon-holed by Goodreads, because I actually come on here for other people's books, not my own. Reviews are my hobby - reading yours, writing mine. I spend a silly amount of time on them - thinking about what I'm going to say, saying it, and then reflecting on what I've said. It's pointless work, but someone's gotta do it.

I'm a slow reader, so still working my way through the classics. I take 'em one at a time and try to wring out every concealed meaning, spotting all nine out of three things the author's hidden. I br

But the reviews will come so long as you're getting the readers. (Especially eBook readers - they are proportionately much more likely to leave a review than P/B readers since it's so easily done on their kindle when they finish the book.) If you're now wondering how to get the readers in the first place...? There's no substitute, when self-pubbing, to run a 5-day zero-price promo on the book - asap after publication. This will win you a heap of readers and will actually make you money (because it generates exposure for the book in Kindle Unlimited). If you run a zero price promo, you'll still need to market it though: I suggest FB ads and promo sites like Freebooksy. THE authority on all this is David Gaughran. Get his eBook, 'Amazon Decoded' (2nd edn). I believe he's also done a pretty handy book on running FB ads? Hope this helps? Dom(less)

A Review of On Writing by Stephen King

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

OK - so my friends were right - that was pretty damn good. I picked this book up with a sniff of scepticism, not because I don't admire Stephen King's writing (to be clear: I revere his writing) - but because I was dubious about any possible one-size-fits-all vibe. I shouldn't have worried. This is a deeply wise, beautiful Read more of this blog post »
