Several of his poems ("The Thousandth Man", "A Servant When He Reigneth", "The Press", even "Boots") were inspired by, or allude to, Bible passages, and each made a strong impression on me.

“Fear Not! And That's An Order.

God’s with you—and so how dare you
Let shrill-screeching weaklings scare you? Trembling at some bully’s boasts
Disrespects the Lord of Hosts.
He who laid the earth’s foundations
Bows to none of His creations—
Their threats are to be despised;
Panic is unauthorized.”
Joe Long, Wisdom and Folly: A Book of Devotional Doggerel

“Do you find the Biblical command to love your enemies difficult? I used to, also. Then I called one of my enemies and cut a deal. He’s going to love my enemies for me, and I will love his for him. That way all of our enemies get loved, while we both stay totally in our comfort zones!”

“A lot of aspiring writers quote the right people, but they do so like Mary Bennett in Pride and Prejudice. They quote Austen like Mary quoted her eighteenth-century bromides, and were Austen here to see them do it, she'd slap them right into her next book, and it wouldn't be pretty.”
Douglas Wilson, Wordsmithy: Hot Tips for the Writing Life

“This life therefore is not righteousness, but growth in righteousness, not health, but healing, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it, the process is not yet finished, but it is going on, this is not the end, but it is the road. All does not yet gleam in glory, but all is being purified.”
