Cynical Optimist - Lover of Everything, Disliker of Much - Literally Metaphorical - I Like to Sometimes Split Infinitives

JR Whitsell, MBA, was born in Denton, Texas, in 1972. The only child of college-educated parents, JR grew up spoiled and in a home filled with books.

Living with an intimation of an attention disorder, JR has worked in many fields, with many titles.

HIS OTHER LIFE is his first book.

Currently, he is writing a series of short stories entitled THAT MOMENT IN TIME. The series is a work of fiction about a family whose patriarch has dementia. The books are based on JR's real-time journals he kept while caring for his father.

That's a tough question. I tend to be an open book, not mysterious.

I suppose my various talents, jobs, degrees, etc. might be a good hook. I have an MBA and a commercial driver's license. I've worked in technical sales, helped build a business from the ground up, led a nonprofit, driven busses and trucks, and was a caregiver. I'm a writer in my spare time. I volunteer for far too many causes. I change my truck's oil myself, repair it when needed.

I don't know where the story would lead because the truth is I simply get bored easily.(less)

I find a place where I can observe people, places, or objects. Then I start writing bullets of exactly what I see and hear.

For example, I once took notes that described a soda machine. I bullet-pointed the colors on the front, the sounds it made when a can was being dispensed, and how the credit card reader worked. I didn't use the machine in a book but using words to describe it activated my creativity. (less)

Don't Kill Another Human (even with remarks)

I've noticed that writing anything without criticism is impossible these days. No matter the subject, someone will inevitably declare everything I believe is incorrect, or the grammar police will swoop in and highlight any violation of their sacred rules. I've read these comments on Twitter, Facebook, and in reviews of my books. Being bashed on social media is expected, so I rarely get into an ele Read more of this blog post »

“Once the disease completely removes the person you once knew, all that is left is a hull of someone you once knew. That’s the first death. You know the second death will come. You just don’t know when.

J.R. Whitsell, That Moment In Time

“Within a year of retirement, Dad showed the early signs of dementia. By 2017, his symptoms were declared mid-stage by his family physician. It's a sad truth, but ultimately, we don't choose the course of our lives.”

“Before 2020, I was naive. I thought that racism, intolerance, supremacism, and bigotry were isolated to the ideals of a tiny, narrow-minded group of people. I was wrong.”
