Set in Nazi occupied Poland, it looks through the eyes of a Jewish woman trying to stay under the radar, foreign journalists in Poland trying to report on atrocities, and a Polish man who joined the Nazis and hired workers for Auschwitz. Showing both human courage and compassion in the face of terrible personal risk, and the determination to fit in at any cost, Padlocked takes us into an earthly hell, and then through to the other side where the characters have to face the consequences of the choices they made on earth, and relive them from the perspective of every person they impacted.

Agata was brought up by her Jewish father in Warsaw, but when the Nazis entered the city her father and sister refused to leave the Jewish quarter with her. Forced to escape alone, she finds herself on a lifesaving mission to find her sister in Auschwitz and rescue her. But to do this, she has to make a terrible decision and walk very fine lines between hurting and helping others.

Hank and Rafe are journalists who travel to Poland to report on the atrocities they see coming. But when the Nazis arrive, they are adopted by the invading forces and used to spread Nazi propoganda. Stuck behind enemy lines, trying to stay alive, they do everything they can to get word oversees, never knowing whether or not their efforts will be successful.

Max grew up on the breadline in Warsaw with his mother, and saw the opportunity to make a name for himself in the local Nazi party. When the invading forces arrived, Max was quick to join the cause and find status and security for himself, hiring staff for Auswitz. But to create this new life, he had to walk away from everything and everyone he knew and loved.

None of the characters face easy choices. None of the characters comes from a position of priviledge. Each one has to make difficult decisions in the face of extreme personal sacrifice and, in the end, each of them has to live with the decisions they make in this life, and atone in the next.

Padlocked is a book about empathy and morality, or lack of it. It reminds us about past atrocities at a time when history seems to be repeating itself, and it brings the story vividly to life through incredible characters. It’s an addictive read with all of P.M. Terrell’s usual page turning quality, and a deep compassion that threads through every single word. Cassandra used to be Chiron’s protege and worked alongside him in his tributary bookshop, constantly frustrated by his judgement. But she left that life a long time ago to become Cass Holt, notorious and feared book thief. I really enjoyed this deeply immersive story and it’s unusual and meticulous world. Cassandra is a great and many faceted character with a lot to learn about herself and the world around her. The slow burn plot is twisty and unexpected, full of magic, threat and shady characters. I really enjoyed the esoteric symbolism from the tarot card archetypes to Chiron himself. Author Hayley Hunter rents a lighthouse in North Carolina to give her the time and space to focus on her next book. The lighthouse is isolated, banked on one side by an alligator infested swamp, and on the other by a tiny village with strange inhabitants. Hayley is told the lamp doesn’t work, so when it turns on in the middle of the night, and Hayley discovers it is unplugged, her calm is shattered. From here things only get stranger, so when she discovers an old diary written by the man who built the lighthouse during the US War of Independence, Hayley becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to him, and how that relates to whatever is haunting her home.

Hayley is a great character with bucketloads of determination and grit. When Shay, her partner, comes to visit from Ireland we get to see a different side of her, and together they continue to research what happened on the site of the Lighthouse. I won’t give the secrets away, but there are lots of threads, surprises and scares along the way.

If you have read April in the Back of Beyond, you’ll have met her before. I loved the first book and it’s well worth your time, but if you want to jump straight into this one I think you could.

I love P.M. Terrell’s books. I will always read anything she writes, and I turn to her books when I need guaranteed page turning quality and immersion. I especially love her paranormal books. The Misremembered Lighthouse is everything I love about her books. It has emotion, romance, spine-tingling hauntings, history, a fabulously atmospheric setting and so much more. If you want to read Hayley and Shay’s romance, do go back and read April in the Back of Beyond first. But whether you do that or not, if you’re looking for a great ghost story with all the emotion and feels, you will love this. Filled with historical figures, the story tracks the French Revolution from early idealism deep into the Reign of Terror, not shying away from facing the bloodshed. It takes the reader into the heart of the Palace of Versailles in its feudal glory, and then visits again when the mob descends. It shows the descent from belief into hopelessness and from righteous fury into obsession and ultimately fear.

But grounding all of this political turmoil are two wonderful characters, Marie Anne Adelaide Lenormand, the Tarot Reader of Versailles, and Caitlin (or Caterina as she’s known in France), a servant from Ireland who travels to France to find the man she has fallen in love with. Recognising each other as kindred spirits, the two women collaborate, doing tarot and psychic readings for wealthy patrons in Paris. Living together, they fall in love and have a life of surprising independence, funded by their readings. But with Lenormand in the Queen’s inner circle, and Caitlin mixing with revolutionaries, the tension only increases.

Adelaide and Caterina are wonderful characters and I loved seeing the revolution through their eyes. They are both strong, self-made women with a history of being isolated, and the home they create together is a powerhouse of both emotion and intrigue. As Lenormand teaches Caterina to read the tarot, the reader is also introduced to an array of spreads and ways to read the cards. I have read Tarot for many years, and reading this book was a joy. The author’s Tarot experience shines through and brings immeasurable depth to the book.

The Tarot Reader of Versailles has it all, a fascinating and deeply frightening period of history, fabulous characters and beautiful mystical elements. It’s a wonderfully evocative immersion and I highly recommend it. ...more
