Let’s Talk About Money

Have you ever asked yourself, “what is money?”

The question itself is straightforward, but the answer is complex and more consequential than you might imagine.

Throughout history, money has taken many forms, depending on when and where you look. Thousands of years ago, some civilizations used seashells as money. Centuries ago, metals like gold and silver were common. Decades ago, paper promises were the dominant medium, and today, we rely on digital credits administered by a suspect banking system.

No matter what money we use, in each case, its form affects economic activity, and consequently, our behavior. Depending on how money is supplied to and governed in the market, in addition to how we transact with it, secure it, and value it, different monies provide different incentives, and we adjust ourselves accordingly. This is the unspoken power of money — it is an engineer of human action.

In a world starved for positive social change, we owe it to ourselves to have an honest discussion about how money makes the world go round and what we can do to improve it. And if we’re going to have that conversation, then we need to consider all options — and that includes Bitcoin.

Shining the spotlight on how money works and why Bitcoin is a sound alternative, I wrote my first book — Magic Internet Money: A Book About Bitcoin, which will be published as a paperback and eBook on October 20, 2020.
