I started writing short fiction in high school, spent far too long writing essays in the world of academe, then got my head on straight when I founded a no-budget movie production company, Cyclops Movies, and wrote and produced three horror/sci-fi/comedies
Since then, I started writing long fiction in wildly different genres - no Annie Wilkes hobbling for me, thank you.
I'm going to write whatever pushes me past the marathon that is putting sentence after sentence for months at a time.
I currently have both a cozy mystery and pulp western series going, just published a non-fiction, and I have another two pulp series in the works plus a very grim horror novel to come out after my final installment of my cozy series.

I have a fairly detailed outline going in, which helps keep me on track and looking at the big picture, but some days, the rusty gate doesn't want to budge. I accept that. On those days, I'll try to write something other than what I'm working on, or I'll take a day off. There's no reason to not give your brain a rest when it's fatigued. Writing is challenging. It's normal to tire. I give myself permission to rest when it's warranted.(less)

Having the freedom to create worlds from mere imagination.
Seeing characters take on lives of their own beyond what you invent them to be. They start of as just a rough sketch, but in time, they become almost living entities. That's incredibly exciting, and at those times, the act of writing feels more like simply recording what these characters are saying on their own rather than through your invention.
When you find out that other people enjoy your work. That's immensely satisfying.

Writing sequels

Writing a sequel to my first book now. I've never written a series before, but it's presenting wonderful challenges as well as opportunity.
You have to show how the characters have evolved from the first book. They were important, so you can't just leave them in the cold. Readers deserve to know how those characters are doing.
You have to introduce new characters. Obviously, readers can't expect to Read more of this blog post »
