Before he was twelve years old, he had lived through post-war Hamburg, cold rainy Manchester, and the warmth of Cairo again, absorbing cultures and languages while carrying wounds that would take decades to name.

It was at eleven, staring at his own gangrenous appendix in a glass jar on a hospital bedside table, that he first felt the pull of surgery. That curiosity never left him.
He trained at University College Hospital Medical School in London, won a travel scholarship to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and completed his surgical residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital at Harvard. He a

The Medical Memoir Series Readers Compare to When Breath Becomes Air: Inside A Surgeon's Tale by Dr. Michael Meguid

What does it take to become a surgeon? Not the version you see on television. The real version: the 110-hour workweeks, the first incision, the patient you lose at 3 a.m., the family you barely see, and the childhood wound that drove you into the operating room in the first place.

That is the question at the heart of A Surgeon's Tale, the five-volume medical memoir series by Dr. Michael M. Meguid, Read more of this blog post »

I picked this up on a whim and finished it in two sittings, mostly because I couldn't stop reading bits aloud to my husband. The bakery scenes alone are worth the price. But what surprised me was how honest it is underneath the humor. The author does ...more

“We arrived in New York as academic students with non-immigrant visas. Although we didn't see ourselves as immigrants, we had brought all our earthly possessions to America, along with our emotional past and personal histories.”
Michael Meguid, Great Joys, Great Sorrows: An Immigrant’s Journey through Surgical Residency

“For us, there is only the trying. The rest is not our business.”
T.S. Eliot

“We leave something of ourselves behind when we leave a place, we stay there, even though we go away. And there are things in us that we can find again only by going back there.”
Pascal Mercier, Night Train to Lisbon

“Tis a Fearful Thing

‘Tis a fearful thing
to love what death can touch.

A fearful thing
to love, to hope, to dream, to be –

to be,
And oh, to lose.

A thing for fools, this,

And a holy thing,

a holy thing
to love.

For your life has lived in me,
your laugh once lifted me,
your word was gift to me.

To remember this brings painful joy.

‘Tis a human thing, love,
a holy thing, to love
what death has touched.”
Judah Halevi

“The first duty of love is to listen.”
Paul Tillich

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”
Albert Einstein
