My two top tips:

If you want to become a novelist read novels. Read as many different genres as possible, but especially your novel's genre. Read the good and the not-so-good. You'll learn from both. Keep reading and then read some more.

Start writing. Don't worry that your writing isn't as good as your favourite novelists. It will be one day. Approach writing in the same way you would learning a musical instrument. You don't expect to be perfect on the first day but after enough practice you will improve. For now, just keep writing.(less)

It was still in my rucksack when I moved to Senghennydd Road. Occasionally I'd take it out and raise it to the dim yellow light to study the handwriting or the post-mark. You Read more of this blog post »

H. Jackson Brown Jr.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
H. Jackson Brown Jr., P.S. I Love You

Clive James
“Socrates, after all, said that the unexamined life was not worth living. He might have added, however, that continual self-examination would leave us no time to live.”
Clive James, The Blaze of Obscurity: The TV Years

Mark Lawrence
“I swallowed darkness, and darkness swallowed me. Without light, without the beat if a heart to count the time, you learn that eternity is nothing fear. In fact, if they'd just leave you to it, an eternity alone in the dark can be a welcome alternative to the business of living.”
Mark Lawrence, Prince of Thorns

Markus Zusak
“I have hated words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right.”
Markus Zusak, The Book Thief

Leigh Bardugo
“It's not natural for women to fight."
"It's not natural for someone to be as stupid as he is tall, and yet there you stand.”
Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows
