I love to read, research, and write history. I am fascinated with the past and love to learn about it by absorbing the material of the time. A great day is to be able to sit on the patio with a book and my computer so I can find newspaper or magazine articles from the year of the story I am reading. My current project is writing the blog Women Celebrities Remembered and Forgotten.

An Asteroid not a Star: The Life of Anita Thompson

Anita Thompson 1921

Anita Thompson in By Right of Birth, 1921.

When Anita Thompson looked back on her time as a young woman, she claimed she was “an asteroid then, in orbit about the brilliant stars.” Becoming a celebrity takes a combination of luck and hard work. Thompson certainly had the luck to draw attention but seemed indifferent to fame and content to look on from far away.

Patricia Hampl
“History, as it was purveyed to us, was not so much a narrative, not even the detached observation of the rise and fall of fortunes and cultures. It was the litany of loss, attended by the inevitable sympathy for the vanquished side. The past was always the underdog, and we sensed it was only right to be on its side against the bully future. We were left with the impression that our own grip was loosening on some essential pediment as one empire after another was swallowed up, and the centuries collapsed into our own.”
Patricia Hampl, Virgin Time: In Search of the Contemplative Life

Marilyn Johnson
“We are all living history, and it’s hard to say now what will be important in the future. One thing’s certain, though: if we throw it away, it’s gone.”
Marilyn Johnson, This Book Is Overdue!: How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All
