I thought dinosaurs were the most interesting thing to study - I couldn't have been more wrong!
Did you know the ancestors of mammals were among the first giant plant-eaters, and fast-running, sabre-toothed meat-eaters? And that although mammals were quite small in the time of dinosaurs, it was their tiny size that allowed their bodies to radically adapt to become the animals we know today? Some of them even ATE dinosaurs...! As I learned more about mammal evolution, I discovered they have this deep and shockingly vibrant history that stretches back long before the dinosaurs even existed. No one had ever told me about this before, it was incredibly exciting.
So I wrote this book to share my wonder about the untold story of mammal evolution - the part you never usually hear about. I'm sure many readers will be as surprised as I was about what they learn!(less)

So maybe reading around the subject, or jotting down notes and thoughts, or just reading through what I've already written. Some days inspiration just won't come, and then I go and do something else constructive, like gardening, crafts, or a breathless hike. Sometimes writers block comes because you're trying too hard! Reading great writing by other people is also really helpful and inspiring.(less)
