How the suffragettes got their name

In Murder in Trafalgar Square, Coral Fairbanks is proud to call herself a suffragette, even though the word was created to belittle women.

In January 1906, a Daily Mail reporter coined the term suffragette using a feminised adaptation of the word suffrage to mock Emmeline Pankhurst’s militant organisation, the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU).
