The story goes …moreApparently, my grandmother's aunt married a missionary. They served somewhere in Africa, but he sadly died and she had to return home. The story goes that on the ship back to Scotland, she fell in love with a black African. Knowing that they would be ostracised in Britain, they were married by the ship's captain and went straight back to Africa! I have no idea how much of this is true. Another element of this family legend is that my great-great aunt was also supposed to be a medical doctor, but I find this hard to believe, given the times and that the family was not well off. Perhaps it was her missionary husband who was qualified. It's a great story, but it would be very difficult to research. Even my mother's generation has now gone, and I have no names or locations to go on.(less)
