Long and dense but delightful. What wonderful characters, and what an uplifting tale, despite its time setting. I loved this book.

Great characters and engaging idea, but I couldn't help but wonder why I was along for the ride at times. In other words, if you are looking for a gripping plot, this ain't it. Still, it was fun to read, and I'm glad everything worked out. ...more

Whoah, this was a wild ride! Church does a great job with characters and setting the time period just right. It felt like reading one of those early 60s novels I enjoy, which was great. I did not see the ending coming, I will admit.

Take out the many, many too-explicit sex scenes (we get it--Emilia was a courtesan!) and the author's not-at-all veiled, irritating, preachy social commentary, and you'd have a pretty good book. Leave it all in and you get 528 pages of drudgery with ...more

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
