Brett is a mechanical engineer from Northwest Indiana. He was born and raised in Plymouth, IN. Starr has co-authored four U.S patents, and currently resides in Michigan City, IN. Also, Brett writes poems in his spare time and has self-published five books of poetry. In June of 2025, Starr co-authored his mental health memoir, The Bipolar Clock, with former engineering boss, Brian Dennis.

Brett's hobby of writing poetry is his creative outlet, or what he considers a healthy addiction. In 2018, Starr began to consider writing a book about his experiences with bipolar disorder.
