WAR ON DAD BOD - Transcript from OUTLAW RADIO Ep 37

The following is the transcript from this weeks "War on DAD BLOG" episode available at the link below. Please consider SUBSCRIBING to the Channel and visiting the links provided. Thank you for your support.

The WAR ON DAD BLOG has been an idea of mine for a number of years now that I’ve been wanting to focus on for pretty much the most selfish reason possible - To help me track the progress I’m making (or NOT making), to keep myself honest about my physical and nutritional efforts, and frankly to have something to write and talk about every day on my platforms that I’m interested in and that others can relate to.

As such, my WAR ON DAD BLOG has evolved over time. From my earliest “workout Reviews” that used to annoy Dalton and Mecca on MYSPACE - well before the thought of being a Dad was in existence. That evolved into workout and fitness articles on the now defunct “HELIUM” website. A few separate Google BlogSpot sites that received middling effort as my schedule and interest waned. But with the most regularity (and even THAT is iffy) with my separate “War on Dad Blog” Instagram account. Though that mostly remains focused on meals i’ve made, walks i’ve taken with my dog and more recently some cute videos I’ve shot and edited about my summertime adventures.

In any event, I’ve been wanting to do something like I’ve seen other creators do online for ages now. Create a platform to talk about my personal health and fitness journey, not from the perspective of an Expert (which clearly I am not) or a personal trainer (again, clearly not me). But as a way to - once again - be accountable, show some vulnerability and have some fun, I’ve wanted to record workouts. Show progress. Make meals on camera. Have chats with other fitness types (like I did a few months back with my buddy Jordan Cieciwa). Basically just do some kind of “this is MY Fitness Journey” series and throw it up online for all to see, laugh at, criticize and hopefully enjoy.

At the end of the day, I’ve always bailed out. Sure, the occasional PR or “Back Day” highlight reel notwithstanding. But a consistent series? I can’t keep up with the effort. Sure, I could blame scheduling, life commitments and more. But the truest reason I’ve not done this is… well … I fail. I relapse. I completely fall off the nutritional wagon and return my natural “Doughboy Roots.”

Obviously, I have NO Excuse. It would be different if I were still the ignorant, skinny-fat 333 pound 24 year old kid who was a few years into his wrestling journey and trying desperately to make some headway in that industry. Back then when I was just starting to learn what benefits Protein had on the body, how important monitoring my macros was, making my mistakes with Keto trends, stimulants and terrible, useless supplements of all kinds.

But I’ve been in the fitness space for half my life now. I know what the pitfalls are. I know what needs to be done.

With that said, having to accept the fact that I simply CAN NOT TRAIN as hard or as consistently or for as long as I used to is an ongoing struggle for me.

Back in the early 2000s? Doing a 2 hour, 2 A Day set of workouts for weeks at a time was relatively No Big Deal. I had energy seeping out of my pores, along with all of the sweat and sodium. While I didn’t know it at the time - Body Dysmorphia and comparing myself to fitter, more natural (and oftentimes UN- Natural) athletes in the wrestling scene skewed my perspective - I can now look back on old footage and see just how damned Fit and Athletic I was. I had POWER. COORDINATION. BALANCE and FLEXIBILITY that a guy my size just normally does not have.

Given how hard I worked back then, it meant that if I let my Nutrition slip a bit - If I allowed myself a few beers and burgers with my weekly meals - that it usually wasn’t that big of a deal. My OUTPUT was regularly greater than my INPUT on the average.

However, Father Time is Undefeated. Now as I stare the half century mark in the eye, I am fully aware that trying to train the way I used to simply isn’t possible anymore.

And that’s a harder pill to swallow than any Blood Pressure medication.

Now, that’s not to say I’m not making any progress. Even with my recently sporadic training sessions and gym workouts I’m learning that “Old Man Strength” really IS a thing. My base numbers there are more or less the same as they were at my peak fitness which is a testament to how well I’ve trained in the past up to this point.

However, I am really noticing that I do not RECOVER as well anymore. The arthritis in my knee is spreading. My shoulder hasn’t been right since January and there are days that I am grateful to not be yanked off my feet when my loving dog spies a squirrel during our neighborhood walks.

Let me be clear, Admitting this out loud while also proclaiming myself to be “The Best Goddamned Heavyweight Champion in Canada” is humbling.

So realizing that I’ve had to make adjustments to my training has been a challenge. Since I can’t train any harder, I have to do more work to prepare. My stretching and warm ups take almost as long as my lifts do. I try to fit in more stretching, dynamic core and body movements. My cardio is generally gentler - more cross-trainers than high incline treadmill walks.

This is a process. Because no matter what any “TRUST ME BRO” peddler is saying online: there is NO Magic Pill, no influencer peddled Peptide or Super Food that is going to make this better. This is about being consistent. Being considerate to yourself. And by putting in the right kind of work so you can get the right kind of recovery.

Which brings me to the hardest truth I face.

I HAVE to be more disciplined with my diet.

Yes, obviously this is something I've said at least 10,000 times before. Wait for it, I’ll likely say it 10,000 more times in the coming years - should I be so lucky.

But this week as I was absentmindedly stuffing some TimBits and a medium Iced Capp into my piehole, I was listening to Ethan Suplee’s conversation with filmmaker Kevin Smith over on his podcast LIFELONG about their mutual friendship and similar weight loss journeys and the struggles they’ve faced in their individual processes.  As a part of that conversation, Mr Smith relayed a parable I’d never heard before that I will paraphrase now.

One day, the Zen Monk was walking from temple to town and fell into a deep pit. The monk laughed at his foolishness, dusted himself off and climbed out.
On the Next day, the Zen Monk was making the same journey and once again fell into the same pit. Less mused this time, the monk dusted himself off, climbed out and continued on his way.
On the third day, the Zen Monk was making the same Journey and fell into the same deep pit. This time, the Zen Monk lost his cool, cursed his fate and raged to the heavens.
After calming himself, the Zen Monk Realized the Truth he was missing : The Deep Pit is Never Going to Move. It is Up to HIM to CHANGE HIS PATH.

And that really struck me. I’ve followed similar patterns in my life for the MAJORITY of my life. Not just with my health and fitness. But with my careers. My creative pursuits. My relationships with others.

If I keep running into the Same Obstacles, I’m the One that Needs to Change my path.

Now to keep things focused here on my WAR ON DAD BOD BLOG, the path I need to change is by thinking the way I used to do things is the only way. For a while, I’ve seen success living by an 80 / 20 RULE - If I eat well 80% of the time, the other 20% isn’t too shabby. But considering the number of snacks I regularly find in my kitchen these days, its safe to say that this has been more of a suggestion than a rule lately.

So let’s try this Again, hopefully without SHAME or Fear of too much Self Flaggelation.

I KNOW what to eat, and what I should try to avoid. I know the substitutions I need to make on top of the ones I already have made. I can do this without getting obsessed with weighing every gram of every meal and adding unnecessary stress and anxiety to my mental health.

I have the knowledge. Now I need to find the discipline.

One final admission?

This is my true addiction. Not drugs. Not really alcohol. It’s food.

So the only way for me to actually WIN MY WAR ON DAD BOD is to realize that this war never ends. I will be faced with temptations every day. Without re-establishing a better nutritional foundation for myself I won’t be able to enjoy the treats and snacks we’re all allowed to have, especially when we’re spending our time with the people who matter the most.

And since that little girl needs her Daddy to live a long and healthy life, I’m hoping I actually HAVE the discipline I need to be here for her.

Hello July - Always a Busy month (reposted from PATREON)

Never mind the personal stuff (family birthdays and celebrations, fence painting, projects and more) this year more than most I am beset with projects and activities.

In addition to my regular postings (which were on auto-pilot for 2 weeks for scheduling reasons - I will be having a very small part of the FRINGE Festival this year. Performing a role in a play for the first time in many years so - this should be an awesome summer.

That of course is in addition to all of the wrestling shenanigans coming up.

More on Live Events Later.

THIS WEEK !

FROM THE VAULT - ADAM KNIGHT vs ROBBY ROYCE : IRON MAN MATCH

Taking on one of the men who broke me into wrestling and pushing ourselves to the point of exhaustion as we battle over the esteemed PCW Heavyweight championship back in 2006. The match is joined "in progress" (thanks VHS Transfer) but the majority of the battle is there. I hope you'll be good enough to check it out.

OUTLAW RADIO -Episode 36 LIVE

Still lining up a guest to go LIVE with me this week. I have a few people waiting to hear back from, but once I do we'll have a follow up Quip if nothing else. Regardless, with so many goings on in the Wrestling / Entertainment industry I'm sure I won't be short of topics.

That said, if YOU want to take part and be a guest on OUTLAW RADIO, please consider the New Tier here on PATREON. I'd love to have a chat !

It's JUNE? - Shared from PATREON

Yeah, that's right. Somehow it's freaking JUNE already.

Been a busy and different year. One where I've been spending a lot of time trying to figure out who I am and want to be for the next phase of my life. The trick of that seems to be remembering that - well - I'm already IN that phase of life. And that there's no starting line to cross.

I'm no different than anyone else.

I'm just ... in it.

So I gotta keep going. Figuring out who I am and Want to be everyday.

And in order to do that, I continue to mine the past.

FROM THE VAULT this week is a bout from 1999 featuring myself against a "Don Callis graduate" CHRIS STEVENS. Chris went on to have a very fun career in and around Central Canada before moving onto other interests involving science and using his brain. But I always enjoyed our encounters for what they were. Exciting battles with surprising enthusiasm and athleticism.

Check it out here.

Last week's OUTLAW RADIO w/ ALDEN DIAZ was a ton of fun. I hope to have another chat with him soon. Episode 30 is this week and I am currently looking for a topic that is speaking to me. I will be going live Mid-Afternoonish I think and will post about it closer to broadcast.

Blaze Pro Wrestling has 12 days of events in a row as a Part of the RED RIVER EX in Winnipeg. Expect the "Best Damned Heavyweight Champion" in Canada to take part in a number of those events as well, to showcase the best of the BPW locker room to new eyes and more in the city. Please come and check it out if you're going to be in Winnipeg.

As always, thanks to my community for continuing to support this Patreon. SHARE , Check in, Please let me know if there's anything you would like to see or hear going forward. And if you want to be a guest on OUTLAW RADIO please consider the new Patreon Tier and call your shot LIVE with me one day.

THIS IS THE WAY

What? I'm seeing The Mandalorian and Grogu with my daughter this weekend and I'm excited about it. Star Wars is forever.

FROM THE VAULT this week is live on YouTube . 1200 Pounds of humanity went to war in a FALLS COUNT ANYWHERE brawl in a fairly iconic Transcona Bar (that I still visit on occassion) between Myself and MOSES LUKE taking on the sharply dressed MR. BLACK and THE AXE. It's wild to look back and see us big bastards throwing bombs, taking dumb risks and just generally doing young men craziness.

Check it out.

https://youtu.be/ynlrNLJB73I

OUTLAW RADIO this week is frankly going LIVE in about an hour as I type this. After being beset by a terrible flu last week I am behind on my prep but still plan to get things out. And while I have no intention of bursting into song, I do plan to talk about LETTING IT GO - whatever "IT" happens to be in any particular case.

Check out the OUTLAW RADIO links to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE and more.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuc93fghcR11gpYlTKGNAjAo6eeF2dJdY

Also, I have added an extra Tier to this channel. So if you're interested in joining ME on OUTLAW RADIO to dictate the topic and share your thoughts, please consider doing so! Also, SHARE the Patreon with anyone whom you think would vibe with the content I'm trying to put out into the world. I'd really appreciate it.

Back next week with more.

END OF APRIL UPDATES - Shared from Patreon

FROM THE VAULT - MONDAY

OUTLAW vs KENNY OMEGA - this was a fun bout that we recorded for the short lived local online video platform "netvid.tv" - yes, this was a pre cursor to YouTube if you can believe that. Anyways, one of our better battles between a prime Outlaw vs the not-quite-yet Best bout Machine. Well worth a look.

https://youtu.be/QwsSA-u6hok

OUTLAW RADIO Wednesday - I pl
an to talk about the fallout from WRESTLEMANIA 42, the recent WWE cuts, Darby Allin winning the AEW Title and of course recap my thoughts from the ANARCHY IN APRIL event from Blaze Pro Wrestling. Should be a fun show, might be a tad early / late - but it will be up THIS Wednesday LIVE.

https://youtube.com/live/j7HYnsgC028?feature=share

On the road this weekend to Saskatoon with Cory Diamond and El Diablo Blanco for BEST ENTERTAINMENT WRESTLING. Myself vs Jeremy Prophet and Giant Orion. expect road stories and more next week.

FROM THE VAULT today is a Tag Match from 2000 featuring a very skinny ME and The Big O vs Donny DiCaprio and Will Damon. All of us were energetic young men busting our humps to make a crowd react. Not that anyone can hear them sadly. Stupid VHS Audio transfer issues Shakes fist - anyways, its a Fun, Please LIKE and Share it.

https://youtu.be/79eQ8lqJh-s

OUTLAW RADIO Is Pre-Recorded this week and is a Preview of THIS Fridays BPW ANARCHY IN APRIL Event. Which in retrospect might be a 1 of 2, especially since it was just WrestleMania weekend. If I was smart I'd get on that bandwagon and do a LIVE about that, or even factor in the recent AEW activity featuring MJF, Darby Allin and title switches.

Anyways, for now - here's the link.

As far as writing goes, I've been slowing chipping away at BOOK 4 of OVERDRIVE. Mostly reworking the Outline which doesn't sound like it should take too long, but everything takes longer than you think it should. Momentum is a bitch. Plus, I've been challenged with the idea of creating a feature film pitch to be shot / filmed here in Winnipeg. All of that is a LONG SHOT - but the idea is too intriguing to turn down. As such, many projects on the go with only distant options in the future.

BUT - being creative fills my soul in a way that the rest of my life professionally often hasn't. Which is why I OS greatly appreciate everyone who hangs with me here on Patreon. Please consider sharing this group out into the world. Building a community on here is huge and could help build a foundation of creativity for everyone if we do it right.

Thanks all.

BUSY WEEK (Stolen from PATREON PAGE)

Hey all. 2 Posts this week for sure. Lots of offline stuff to do as well. Family commitments and more. BUT I want to stay on track as much as possible with updates here in the hopes of growing this community. So, thank you all for being a part of this.

FROM THE VAULT - this Mondays update was a fun match between myself and my old running buddy ROB STARDOM. Rob's done quite well for himself with his own YouTube show Vlogs and more. This match was from the year 2000 pitting 2 very young, very eager men against each other for a very tiny crowd. The audio is pooched on this one sadly, the VHS transfer failed me this time around. Still - a fun little slice of history.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOxy3ogF5fs

OUTLAW RADIO This week was suggested to me by the even more veteran grappler Mr TOD BULLET where he suggested that I talk about what it was / is like backstage at either a WWE / AEW event. In that vein i've decided to take it a step furth and talk about how even the process of getting booked on those events has change (and NOT changed) in 30 years. Man, that should be fun. Not sure if it'll be a good "How to" for the grapplers of today, but it should be a fun discourse if nothing else !

https://youtube.com/live/XeLvP9simxM?feature=share

More to come as always. Eventually I'll add more tiers to this Patreon page with some exclusive stuff. But I really do want to build a community more than anything. So if you know anyone who might be interested in joining for please consider sharing this out to them. I'd be happy to chat and hopefully be engaging.

Being Okay About Not Being Okay

Yeah, so - it's been a minute. A challenging minute if I'm being honest.

In spite of my best efforts to sit and write and express myself and my thoughts, frankly - I've been at a loss for words.

Still am in many ways. I have the urge to write, but the trepidation of wondering how much to say.

At the beginning of September I had a particularly bad moment. Sent me into a bad place mentally. No, not self-harming- so please, not like that. But definitely to a challenging spot. one where I didn't know how to handle myself.

After spending the majority of my adult life in what felt like a state of "need to" I hit a minor breaking point. Well, I'm calling it minor, but it didn't feel like it at the time.

At the urging of my loved ones I went to see my physician and had some tests done. I'm glad that I did.

Insomnia. Dangerously high blood pressure. Anxiety. Migraine level headaches.

So, I've been prescribed some gentle meds and lots of rest. It took me all of September to properly learn how to sleep again - I know, right? And most of October to prioritize the things that are really important to me.

Family. Health. Peace of mind.

So that's gonna be my focus for a bit. trying to get myself better so that I can BE better for my family.  So many times I've said these words out loud. To myself and to others. But for the first time in a long time ... I'm going to actually try and follow through.

Because people love me. and need me. And I'm no longer going to be "just getting by" in my efforts to be there for them.

We are no good to the people we love if we aren't good to ourselves.

Important to remember.

We're Still Standing

So many things to be said and not sure where to begin.

Post show I've been trying to write some recap blogs about the specific matches, put over those who've been making big strides and just generally trying to share to love and positivity that I've frankly re-Found for Pro Wrestling.

On more than a few occasions I've thought I was out. Out of interest. Not wanting to make the effort. Deal with the prima donnas in the "locker rooms". The money launderers, the sex pests, the ego cases ... I mean, yeah, you find those in pretty much any industry. But well, wrestling comes from carny lifestyle so ... by and large that ain't going to completely go away.
But what Billy, and Tony and Diamond (and their very supportive partners of course) have put together with Blaze Pro Wrestling is a truly Family Environment.

Sure, we got some cussing, bad language and more. Every event features some kind of hardcore match of "questionable family friendly rating."

But every event, training session and basically every time we get together - you can feel everyone pulling together as a TEAM. Friday Aug 29th - the last Long Weekend of a beautiful Manitoba Summer we packed over 300 people into the Franco Manitoban Cultural Centre in Winnipeg. Those people came out to see the stars of Blaze Pro Wrestling and no one else. No import talent charging a fortune to tiptoe through matches. No "indy darling" of questionable reputation who was going to dictate the terms for who they'd work and how. No local media group helping us get the word out.

Just One Team of hard working, dedicated people who've busted ass all year, put on consistent, quality events to the enjoyment of our fanbase.

This is how Wrestling Unites people.

The smiles. The kids screaming. The sweat, the effort and more.
This is Pro Wrestling.
And the best part, we're just getting started.

We all see areas for improvement and we're going to do just that. As the Provincial Champion (excuse me, the Best God Damned Heavyweight Champion in all of Canada) I have the privilege and burden to deliver against top flight opponents. Next up (currently) Mr Manitoba himself, breaking out on his own is "The Beast" Brenden Blake. 275lb of pure athlete. The visual alone of us facing off was enough to get the crowd excited.

This whole roster deserves a standing ovation. And I could go on endlessly.

But for now I just want to say "Thank you" and finally "Now we go to work!"

AK
