Bored one day, I was checking out the teddy bears in their cots, and one large bear had a zip down its back. I opened the zip to see what was inside...and found it stuffed full with bundles of $20 bills. Being vaguely aware that I was probably not meant to know about the existence of this money, I zipped the bear closed and never said a word to anyone until decades later.
The bear has made a minor appearance in one of my short stories. Where the money came from and why it was concealed in a child's toy remains a mystery.

Fantasy Magazine Issue 98

My flash fiction story “Knife Plus” is in Issue 98 of Fantasy Magazine, and will be published online on the magazine’s website on 24 October 2025. This story was inspired by a talk from the Buddhist teacher James Low. I should emphasize that the connection between the inspiration and the end product is extremely loose. As in, “I dropped the leash, the dog ran away, and now it’s implicated in sever
