Thanks for giving it a try, Gemma. I hope you push through to the end and that some of what's explained in the last book help pull things together.

"I just can’t make my mind up. The storyline is really engaging but despite being quite short for this genre, it seemed to take ages to get going and yet at the same time it felt too fast paced, like all the key details were missing. Characters built "

"Going from a Sanderson length and paced book to this is a stark contrast, wow. The pacing is naturally quick due to the book being shorter which leads to some questionable trusting of strangers by the characters who seem to become friends who would d"

“There was a saying my own father used to repeat to me when I was a lad. He said that real heroes are those who don’t even realise who they are or what they have done.”

“The sudden noise made Aldarin jolt up in surprise, his hand reaching automatically over his shoulder to draw an axe that wasn’t there. Jelaïa caught sight of his expression and burst out laughing. “Oh no, geese!” she shouted in mock distress. “Whatever shall I do? Save me, my brave knight, from these devious birds of death!” She batted her eyelashes. Aldarin scowled, then the corner of his mouth twitched, and he let out a deep laugh of his own.”

“I do not refute the importance of soldiers. There will come a time when every kingdom will require a means to defend itself. I would simply postulate that fighters, however numerous or well-trained, are but a small part of the equation. For what would happen if the wall they are standing on is too brittle? If it collapses under its own weight? If the lack of proper foundations causes it to sink into the mud or sand? You may do as you wish, they are your temples and your initiates. But I believe the world already has plenty of soldiers. I will train builders.”

“The second thing you have to do to be a writer is to keep on writing. Don't listen to people who tell you that very few people get published and you won't be one of them. Don't listen to your friend who says you are better that Tolkien and don't have to try any more. Keep writing, keep faith in the idea that you have unique stories to tell, and tell them. I meet far too many people who are going to be writers 'someday.' When they are out of high school, when they've finished college, after the wedding, when the kids are older, after I retire . . . That is such a trap You will never have any more free time than you do right now. So, whether you are 12 or 70, you should sit down today and start being a writer if that is what you want to do. You might have to write on a notebook while your kids are playing on the swings or write in your car on your coffee break. That's okay. I think we've all 'been there, done that.' It all starts with the writing. ”
