Jonathan Byrd is a husband, father of three daughters, and an eternal optimist, some might even say a Micawber. He is a fifth generation resident of Biloxi who never imagined living anywhere else. However, after leaving, has never imagined returning. The more of the world he sees, the more he wants to experience. He hails from the hidden jewel of Alabama, Fairhope, but currently resides in Kirchenthumbach, Germany.
He is one of the founding members of Transcendent Authors, and his short work appears in all their anthologies. His most recent novel, JUST ONE MORE, was a finalist in the 2026 Faulkner-Wisdom Creative Writing Competition, yet remains unpublished. It tells of a joint US/German defense of a castle against the Waffen SS after the s

Why pick an unknown battle in a town well off the beaten path? Well because once I heard what had happened, I could not resist.

The battle of Castle Itter was strangest encounter of the war. It was the last battle of the European theater (taking place after the suicide but before the surrender), and one of only two known instances where American and German forces teamed up to defend against the Waffen SS. It was also the only time US forces ever defended a medieval castle.

As a long-form writer I can tell you that summarizing is hard. But this is my attempt at back cover banter to describe the novel:

At the start of the war, the Nazis capture several political, military, and other leaders they deemed valuable to the Reich. These prisoners eventually end up at Castle Itter, in Austria. After the Führer commits suicide, the captors and guards at the castle abandon their posts, leaving the prisoners vulnerable to the ranging bands of Waffen SS in the area. Wehrmacht Major and recent addition to the Austrian Resistance, Josef Gangl, drives across the frontline and finds American tanker Jack Lee. Gangl and Lee ride back to recon the castle, then back to the rest of Lee’s unit. This time they return to Castle Itter with Sherman tanks and troops. The next day, the Waffen SS attack. Will the joint defense be successful? JUST ONE MORE tells the story of these pivotal days and of the last battle in the European Theater of World War II.(less)

For Those Who Like Paper

Tolerance: A Collection of Short Stories is now available in a paperback form. Not just eBook. It is available on Barnes & Noble as well as Amazon. Or as I prefer to think of it, Tolerance for people not tolerant of eBooks.

Admittedly, that’s harsh since some of us simply prefer but are not opposed to the electronic form of books. But you have to admit it’s at least slightly humorous, right? It’s

" It was an interesting story, and not what I really expected. The twist at the end was unexpected but I thought it was a little anti-climatic. "

C.S. Lewis
“In a sort of ghastly simplicity we remove the organ and demand the function. We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.”
― C.S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man

Brené Brown
“If you are not in the arena getting your ass kicked on occasion, I am not interested in or open to your feedback. There are a million cheap seats in the world today filled with people who will never be brave with their own lives, but will spend every ounce of energy they have hurling advice and judgement at those of us trying to dare greatly. Their only contributions are criticism, cynicism, and fear-mongering. If you're criticizing from a place where you're not also putting yourself on the line, I'm not interested in your feedback.”
