Hi Connie,

Thanks so much for picking up the book. And for your question.

To be honest, the idea had been rattling around in my subconscious for a long, long time. When I was a teenager I lived with my parents in the Annex neighbourhood of Toronto. It was a bohemian part of the city back in the day. I met one of my neighbours--a guy who was a couple of years older than me. He lived down the street in a ramshackle apartment with a bunch of dogs and cats and two hippie girls who happily supported him. They had jobs. He just hung out. He told me he was writing a manifesto, and that he was going to start a cult. I remember joking about how it would be a good way to make money. And so the seed was planted. A few years ago I heard about various gurus who simply stare at their followers. I thought that was really interesting. Why would an unbroken gaze illicit such a powerful emotional response? Why would people spend many of their hard earned dollars to have someone just look at them? I wondered if maybe it conjured up a memory from childhood. An infant is looked at that way by loving parents. An infant receives unconditional love, has no worries, and is completely taken care of. All of these thoughts started mixing together. I began to think about what humans need to feel happy and fulfilled. And about faith. Then the story began to take shape. Apologies for the very long answer. And thanks again for reading my book. One of the protagonists is a psychology student. So there will be some familiar stuff in there for you. I hope you like it!

Cheers, e(less)

“I needed a story. Something local, but juicy. And more than just newsworthy. I was holding out for gasp-worthy.

And I found it. Or rather, it found me. Yup, your humble J-school grad was pretty much handed a tale that had it all: sex and drugs (not the regular kinds), multiple deaths (untimely, natch), rich folks and rituals and loads o' lawsuits- even a celebrity cherry on top.

My newbie journo peers might be settling for three inches of coyotes in the subway, some spry centenarian's weightlifting regime or a bucket of campylobacter in the church supper salad, but I was planning to debut large and with oomph.

The story was mine. I just had to figure out how to tell it.”
Elyse Friedman, The Answer to Everything

“The Poodle
The poodle -- nature’s most perfect food -- was invented by Otto Van Plotsberg in 1872. According to Van Plotsberg he had only just begun experimenting with kinky hair and extra toes when he happened upon the formula for poodles. Van Plotsberg’s first poodles sported only one leg -- a stumpy appendage protruding from the center of the body. These crude early versions (commonly inverted and used as hat stands) were soon abandoned in favor of the superior French model, which featured a winning smile and four limbs positioned strategically around the torso. Thus began the dizzying proliferation of the modern-day poodle -- hampered temporarily by a 1909 decree which stated that “Henceforth all poodles shall bear the name Svee,” marking a slight decline in the population until the edict was overturned. Today, poodles inhabit every corner of the earth. Witness the African Killer Poodle, The Wild Poodles of Borneo, and the elusive Giant Swamp Poodle of Denchai.”
Elyse Friedman, Then Again

“That’s just you trying to get away with shit, Ronald. You know damn well that a naggy wife is really just a lousy husband.”
Elyse Friedman, The Opportunist
