Pam Saylor grew up in the landlocked Midwest, reading books and dreaming of travel. While on a year-long trip visiting nine countries and two continents, she managed to control her Type 1 diabetes and reconnect with her husband. A former paralegal turned contented retiree and travel addict, Pam lives with her husband Dave in Colorado. Pam and Dave are currently busy trying to agree on their next adventure. Braving the World: Adventures in Travel and Retirement is her first book.

Really fascinating historical account of the British Women’s Institutes and their work during WWII. I also got the PBS show of the same name which complements the book.

I loved peeking into the marriages of these literary giants using their intimate relationships to dig deep. I knew about the Dickens’ marriage having read a biography of him, but knew nothing of the other couples. Very readable and food for thought.

“For years, in between our short trips overseas, my husband Dave and I started talking about a different kind of trip, a long-term trip. Both of us loved the food, wine, and people of Italy, and we began talking/dreaming about someday living in Italy for an entire year. We named this dream our Beautiful Dream—our “Bel Sogno.”

“By hook or by crook, I hope that you will possess yourselves of money enough to travel and to idle, to contemplate the future or the past of the world, to dream over books and loiter at street corners and let the line of thought dip deep into the stream”
