Nicole and I were close friends when we were both 13 years old and lived in the same Asian city. When I moved to Europe Nicole and I continued to write each other, but by the time we graduated from college we lost touch and never saw each other again.

Rather than trying to find out where Nicole might be, I wrote this story as a private and personal exercise in imagining circumstances in which Nicole and I did meet again, with me in my current situation as a husband and father, and Nicole in a presumably similar situation.

I set the story in the middle of a financial crisis, but those events are the products of my imagination. What was relevant was the way the story expressed my feelings in my late thirties / early forties about Nicole and our relationship, and I wrote this novel as my way of saying goodbye to Nicole, once and for all.

The exercise was so successful I completely forgot about the novel, including its title, until last summer when 42 years later Nicole and I met up again.

Susan Henderson Chris! It's great to see you here. And yes, it went straight into junk, I just checked.

Off to Montana first thing in the morning. I'll catch up with you when I get back.
