Benjamin Connor Irwin was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and grew up in the Southeastern and Appalachian regions of the United States before moving to Oregon at age sixteen. A childhood spent on the move as the perpetual new kid in town led him to a life-long love of fiction, especially fantasy, horror, and science fiction. He graduated from Warner Pacific University with a Bachelor of Science in History and Human Development/Family Studies and works as a funeral director. He loves coffee, books, rain, dogs, cooking, hiking, playing guitar, and weightlifting. Ben lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, Lauren, and their dog, Jack London.

I agree with him on this 100% and couldn't say it better. You can't wait to be in the mood to write if you want to get any sustained writing accomplished to complete a book-length project, or several. You have to make a habit of writing daily whether you feel like it or not, and you need to have goals for the amount of words or pages you're trying to put down week to week. We intellectualize it and make it sound more complicated than it is, but writing is really just a matter of sitting down and banging out that manuscript one word after another until it's done.(less)

Every kind of story there can be has been told before, but not by you, and it's you who will make it new again for others. The world of publishing, regardless of your path to publication, can be an overwhelming and discouraging slog. But we also live in an exciting time where the industry is rapidly changing, self-publishing platforms have democratized storytelling, and if you're willing to learn the different elements of designing, formatting, editing, publishing, and promoting a book, you can really make this your own.(less)

Stephen King
“When all else fails, give up and go to the library.”
Stephen King, 11/22/63

J.R.R. Tolkien
“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Stephen King
“When asked, "How do you write?" I invariably answer, "One word at a time," and the answer is invariably dismissed. But that is all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope.”
Stephen King

J.R.R. Tolkien
“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisioned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape?. . .If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!”
J.R.R. Tolkien

Martin Luther King Jr.
“I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.”
Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from the Birmingham Jail
