I have long held the belief, partly inspired by my discovery of compelling self-published authors like Raymond St. Elmo and by my own disillusioning experiences with the publishing industry, that there must be fine examples of writing out there that I have long held the belief, partly inspired by my discovery of compelling self-published authors like Raymond St. Elmo and by my own disillusioning experiences with the publishing industry, that there must be fine examples of writing out there that aren't being allowed past the gatekeepers and which struggle to gain the wider attention they may deserve when their authors attempt to go it alone. Because of this conviction I do try to have my antenna open for self-published work that indicates literary merit, and this has led me to try D. C. Emery's Where Life is Easiest for Men. Unfortunately, while there is plenty to suggest promise in the author, which may lead me to explore some of his other work, there was not enough in the novel itself for me to rate it highly or to cite it as evidence in vindication of my search.

The book can be readily assessed in three parts, and my lower rating of the book comes from the fact that not only does each section have dissatisfying flaws but that the author does not do the best job of transitioning from one to the next. The book begins with a lengthy, ill-advised Author's Note (the story itself should always be the first thing we hear from an author, in my opinion, particularly a debut author) and the first part of the novel itself is a broadly conventional post-apocalyptic scenario. There has been a pandemic and society has collapsed; the protagonist is bunkered down in his own home. The Covid parallels are obvious (the novel was begun around that time), but even so I struggled to buy into the world Emery created. Apparently, the protagonist has been sat in his house for 15 years and "never left, not even… for a single second" (pg. 35), surviving solely on collected rainwater and food from his garden, which I find implausible even before you pull at the story's looser threads.

When he does finally leave, the protagonist encounters "crazies", feral, dehumanised brigands who are also underdeveloped as a threat. The first part ends unsatisfactorily with the protagonist saved from their clutches by a "ball of light" which is left unexplained; a frustrating piece of deus ex machina. One might argue that all this is beside the point; that the book has literary ambitions and the post-apocalyptic scenario is merely a vehicle for the authorial premise. But it feels insufficient; the groundwork isn't done to make this a plausible world to facilitate Emery's aims.

At this point I still felt rather positive about the book. It wasn't proving as compelling as I had hoped it would be, but it had its idiosyncrasies – and idiosyncrasies often have the potential to become interesting. I admired that it was doing its own thing. But after that "ball of light", Emery transitions the novel awkwardly into its second part: a pre-pandemic encounter with a man called Frank, who the protagonist quickly befriends. This relationship is, again, largely unearned and developed by the two writing letters to one another, which is bizarre and anachronistic even before Emery has them write in an affected, almost 19th-century tone.

It deepens what has already become frustrating in the novel by this point; an indulgence of the author's thoughts and philosophising which is unalleviated by any plot development or narrative release valve. A key feature of the book throughout is its plotless monologuing on the protagonist's inner thoughts and feelings, and while I am generally rather partial to such an approach it did get a bit too much. The bones of the novel are far too underdeveloped to bear the weight, and a lot of that weight is a burden that could be cut.

After Frank, the novel then transitions even more abruptly and implausibly – through a man sat on a bench – into its final phase. This is hard to communicate in a review without spoiling it for those who remain intrigued enough to read Where Life is Easiest for Men, but it was a bold and kooky development that catapults the novel unexpectedly into an abstract, transcendental sci-fi premise.

This, at least, had some reward for me as a reader, and appears to have been Emery's motivation for writing the book. The title of the novel is taken from a passage in Homer's Odyssey which describes the fruits of Elysium, the afterlife. The final chapters of Emery's novel attempt the same, at greater length and with mixed results, but it is an interesting choice. The ending has some quality of writing and as a reader you feel some of that heaven-sent revelation that the author is trying to evoke. This is no small thing and, despite my dissatisfaction with the novel, it inclines me to keep the door open to exploring some of the author's other work. Emery isn't able to sustain the quality to novel-length, but the book has its moments and I may well try some of his short stories.

The problem, here and throughout the novel, is its imbalance, both in structure and direction. It is a curate's egg of a novel, making strange, brave and unusual decisions throughout and often lacking the skill, patience or wherewithal to get to where it wants to go. World-building, character and dialogue can be improved, always, with graft, but Where Life is Easiest for Men falters badly when it transitions inelegantly from part one to two to three without fully satisfying the reader on what it wants to do in any of those parts. Emery labours often here with his vision; everything is on the page, whereas the author might have been better advised not to show so much of his working. And yet, at the same time, so much of the novel seems invented, like a dream, with that same assumed consistency of dream logic that feels inadequate in the cold light of day. The hardest yards are not pounded, the vision consequently underwhelms, and sadly much of what Emery is trying to do feels unearned. That said, it is an unconventional path he has trod here, and such an independent mentality is good for a writer and may prove more successful in future novels. This is the legend invoked in The Lord of the Rings by the relationship between Aragorn and Arwen: a mortal man, Beren, falls in love with an elf, Lúthien, and she sacrifices her immortality to be with him. As part of his quest to win her favour, he seeks to reclaim a lost mythical jewel, a Silmaril, from the crown of the dark lord Morgoth.

The ingredients are there, then, for Tolkien's crowning epic romance, and certainly I got a dose of that when I read the story of Beren and Lúthien as one of the stories in The Silmarillion some years ago. But in this stand-alone title Beren and Lúthien, it is an exercise in frustration. Heavily edited by Christopher Tolkien, the son can't get out of the father's way here; the book reproduces multiple different drafts of the legend, both in prose and verse, all stitched together by Christopher's meticulous and forensic commentary.

While this curation is astute and admirable, it does dilute the power of the story as story. Rather than a tale told from beginning to end, it is stop-start and turned inside out, reflected on and repeated. Christopher is loath to sacrifice his father's purity, but a culling of lore and miscellanea might have been a necessary evil. We are given numerous iterations of the story, sometimes with different names and contexts and characterisations, and the tone is more like an academic monograph or piece of comparative literary analysis than a sparkling, elf-hewn romance.

Unlike The Children of Húrin, which had a light editorial touch and seemed mostly – and miraculously – completed by J. R. R. Tolkien himself, Beren and Lúthien is more of a restored patchwork piece. An elegant patchwork, threaded by elven silk, but patchwork nonetheless. It gets bogged down in its wider lore and the romance at its core never becomes realised. This could and perhaps should have been Tolkien's Romeo and Juliet; in a world of epic deeds a quiet love story, epic in its own way by lightly "glistening with dust of elven-gems", as Tolkien wonderfully writes in one of the lore-adjacent final chapters (pg. 253). But in reality we barely spend any time with Beren and Lúthien themselves, or feel the depth of their love; a missed opportunity not only as story but as an expression of its author, for he apparently based the mesmerising, elfin Lúthien on his own beloved wife. I've been on one of my habitual (and somewhat ill-advised, given its heavy content) dives into 9/11 material recently, in the lead-up to and aftermath of the 25th anniversary of the attacks – an incredible number, for the events seem both so very close and vivid and yet so extremely far away in time. Part of the reason for our collective schizophrenic memory of the doom, for those of us old enough to remember the news on the day itself, is our difficulty in reconciling two different worlds of recall, divided emphatically by an outburst of fireballs in a severely clear sky – the pre- and post-9/11 worlds.

This schism, I have come to recognise, while real and relevant, is in some ways a nostalgic fallacy. Just as those of an earlier generation recognise an innocent, blue-skied world lost irretrievably by the traumatic events of Dallas in 1963, and those of an even earlier generation lamented the loss of Edwardian summer to the holocaustic rumblings of 1914, the divide between the pre- and post-9/11 worlds is not quite as stark as it appears - although its loss is, alas, irretrievable.

The Looming Tower is a good document of this, as it painstakingly researches and chronicles the events leading up to 9/11 and shows that the horror did not emerge spontaneously out of a perfect blue sky. Published five years after 9/11 – author Lawrence Wright remarks in his Acknowledgments at the end of the book that he asked his New York editor to begin the project on the day itself (pg. 452) – one would imagine, in 2026, that the work would have been superseded by more recent scholarship. But no – The Looming Tower remains the best popular introduction to the events leading up to 9/11. Wright relates it all excellently; the narrative is clear and concise, and while the writing does not often stir (the quote with which I opened this review is an emphatic exception) there is great skill in conveying such a mass of complicated information in an engrossing, readable way.

Wright chronicles the development of Al-Qaeda from its early, anti-Soviet antipathies to its melting away into the shadows after Tora Bora, when American bombers sought to bring a paltry reckoning to the instigators of an atrocity that had, regrettably, forever set the world on an ill course. Along the way, we learn just how Osama Bin Laden built on the malevolent theorising of earlier thinkers, not least the vicious, jealously repressed Sayyid Qutb and the reckless, indifferent Saudi spending that promoted a mind-warping Wahhabi doctrine across the world, into a murderous campaign of borderless terrorism that not only birthed a new world of terror and uncertainty, both economic and political, but perverted Islam as a force – not only in the minds of non-Muslim people worldwide but in an ever-growing segment of the religion's adherents themselves. A taboo on suicide bombing is broken (pg. 186), a casual anti-Western antipathy held by many Muslims metastasizes into something more fundamentally opposite and cruel, and the killing of Muslim and non-Muslim innocents alike not only becomes permitted and excused, but glorified.

As The Looming Tower develops, Wright begins to devote more attention to the US intelligence efforts that sought to disrupt Bin Laden's operations, not least in light of dire warnings that something big was about to happen in the American homeland itself. Key to the tragedy Wright relates is the tension between the CIA and the FBI, personified by John O'Neill, the head of the FBI's Bin Laden unit who, frustrated with the lack of progress and with his career wounded by bureaucratic politics, takes up a job as head of security at the World Trade Center in late August 2001 and dies in the attack just a few weeks later. To read of this, and of the crucial links in the intelligence chain that, had information been shared appropriately, would have stopped 9/11 (or so the author contends explicitly on pages 330-1 and 342) is not only frustrating but, 25 years after the attacks, a lament for battles lost.

Because whilst The Looming Tower was, on its publication in 2006, a crucial early public educator for a Global War on Terror that was then in full and chaotic swing, it is now, in 2026, a sad roll call of defeat. Whatever your thoughts on the merits and demerits of religion and of Islam, the latter's perversion in the minds of many into an outright death cult is a profound defeat for humanity; its tenets deepened and darkened by malicious actors and shallow characters who found plenty more such people willing to follow in their footsteps. And the civil war amongst a complacent American intelligence community that prized petty infighting, bureaucracy and geopolitical meddling over intelligence-sharing against very real dangers – although they naturally hold far less responsibility than the murderers themselves. In tracing this sorry sequence of events, both intended and unintended, The Looming Tower shows us that the pre-9/11 world is not so much a lost world, but a world discarded. A book like this is hard to properly assess in a review without providing spoilers, and considering the book is all mystery and suspense that would surely defeat the point of reading it. A basic spoiler-free summary of Solace House would be as follows: a group of university students sign on to clear out a haunted house over the summer and, of course, encounter more than they bargained for.

That sounds a bit cliché, but there's more than routine haunted-house fare here; the titular Solace House bends minds rather than provides ghosts and scares, and there's a slow-burn, Lovecraftian sense of dread that develops throughout the novel. While Solace House is not on the level of Lovecraft, it is rather well-written (in particular, the effort author Will Maclean made with the poetic ciphers shows the care taken in its composition) and the characterisation, while not spectacular, is solid.

Maclean draws out the mystery and tension well, although the ending will divide opinion among the book's readers. While again straining to avoid spoilers, I am in the camp that considers it insufficient reward for such a long build-up. So much of the 500-page novel seems to be about setting up all the dominoes, but I expected more sparks when they began to fall. Maclean's decision to provide a more introspective climax suits the tone of the story and I retain a healthy respect for it, but I never saw Solace House as a particularly literary book, despite its Gothic approach, and so when the ending was considered rather than climactic I did feel a little disappointed. I feel that a book which prioritises mystery and thrills – entertainment rather than cerebral literature, although it has some of the latter – is somewhat obligated to resolve its more conventional plot threads and character catharsis, but Solace House instead shifted its priorities for the final act. It felt unbalanced at the last, but only mildly so, and the book is very good company; one of those novels that you're happy to just sink into as a diversion and read into the early hours. ...more

So it was a pleasant surprise that I picked up King John and encountered a tidy little play that I didn't have to meet halfway or work too hard for, but could just accept as a regular happy dose of the Bard.

It's essentially a poor man's Henry V; political machinations and wars with France overlaid with ringing patriotic language and some subtler undercurrents on the nature of political power. The political scheming itself is a bit unfinished; the power-players are unclear, the stakes of either side are not clear beyond a binary 'this-king-or-that-king', and the play moves perfunctorily from one major event to the next without seeding those developments naturally – something that Shakespeare was a master at doing with great economy in the years immediately after with Henry V and Julius Caesar.

But the origins of the triumph of those later plays is worked out here in King John, for not only is Shakespeare beginning to grapple with the political mechanics here that he would later manipulate so remarkably, but King John also shows one particular fully-realised character and some beautiful language. In some of Shakespeare's lesser plays you find yourself making apology for their naked inferiority to his brighter works, but King John has the crackling Bastard Faulconbridge, whose dialogue snaps, and some stirring patriotic passages – not least the final "and we shall shock them" gem which ends the play. Unlike other lesser plays, there's no question in my mind who wrote this one: the Shakespeare voice you know and love is here in the language in a way no one else could be. And while it is objectively a lesser play, it's a compelling piece in understanding Shakespeare's development as a playwright, and therefore of certain value. ...more
